bell housing question

hello everyone.

i have a '62 shortwheelbase stepside. my grandfather bought this truck new with a 235 six banger, three on the tree. this truck has a hydraulic clutch with a slave cylinder mounted to the passenger side of the bell housing.

my problem: the motor is shot. i have acquired a rebuilt 250 i want to drop in. the bell housing won't bolt up and i don't want to adapt.

is there a bell housing out there that will acommodate my slave cylinder that will bolt up???

tanks.

Re: bell housing question

yes. look for a v8 bell housing 62 and down. the 250 6 has the same bolt pattern as the v8 motors. but your gonna have to figureout motor mounts. your 235 motor has a front mount and the 250 has side mounts. im sure someone here can tell you a little more about mounts that will work

Re: bell housing question

tanks for the info. what i thought was a 250 i now know to be a 230. there are characters stamped into the block behind the distributor port. how do those play into the equation??

my apologies for all the questions. tanks for the info.

i want to take a minute to express a thought. i was looking thru a wonderful thread where an individual showed no restraint (sp?) in taking a cutoff saw to a rusty body and installing repair patches. wonderful work with mucho skill involved. skill that was acquired by getting out there and doing it.

a self-described "computer geek" commented on the work and wished he had that skill. now mind you, we're all born with something we're good at. but there are so many things we learn to get good at thru the course of our lives.

i used to believe i couldn't rebuild an engine. i now know it's not that big a deal. i used to think i couldn't weld. i went and bought a 110 mig machine and now i can not only mig, but stick and TIG weld!

the point in all this rant?? we're only limited by the electric pulses bouncing around in that gray matter between our ears.

get out there and bounce some off your truck today. you'll be shocked at what can happen!

(rant off)

The Chevy 230 inline 6 cylinder engine was first produced in 1963 to be used in the Chevy Chevelle for the first model year of 1964.
It replaced the popular Chevy 235 as the preferred 6 cylinder engine.
After that the Chevy 230 was used in various different Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac vehicles until 1969.
In 1967 Pontiac produced a special version of the 230 inline 6 known as the W53 which produced an impressive
215 horsepower and was used in the 67 Firebird as well as the 67 Tempest Sprint coupe.

The 230 Replaced 235 cubic inches (3.9 L).
It was also used by Chevrolet and GMC trucks, primarily the half-tons.
It produced 140 hp (100 kW). The 230 had a firing order of 1-5-3-6-2-4 rotating clockwise.
This engine was used on the following vehicles:
1964 Chevrolet Chevelle
1965-1968 Checker Marathon
1965 Chevrolet El Camino
1966-1970 Chevrolet Nova
1966 Studebaker Commander, Wagonaire, Daytona and Cruiser
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle
1967 Chevrolet Camaro

3.8 Pontiac L6
The Pontiac 3.8 was a special SOHC version of the standard
230-cubic-inch (3.8 L) I6. An optional W53 version on the Firebird produced 215 hp (160 kW).
This engine was used on the following vehicles:
1967 Pontiac Firebird
1967 Pontiac Tempest Sprint coupe

Chevrolet: came with an inline six cylinder and a small block 283 V-8 1960 –1966.
The 327 V-8 became an option starting in the 1966 model year
The 235 inline six cylinder was switched to the 230 inline six cylinder in 1963
4 x 4's retained the 235 inline six cylinder in 1963 (not sure what last year 235 was for 4 x 4)
The 250 inline six cylinder was offered in the 1966 model year

The 409 came in 1964 and 1965 model 60H and 80-Series trucks
The 1966 model 60H, and 80-Series came with the new 366ci. "Big Block"

The Late (1954 - 62) 235's and 261's can be identified by:

Four screws holding down the valve cover ("dummy" studs are sometimes seen on the valve covers)
A shorter side cover which stops below the spark plugs
