Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

Thanks for all the comments guys.
It's been that way for the 2 years that I've had it.
Should I fix it....YES.
Can I afford to at this time....NO.
Am I mechanically inclined....NO.
Can I contort myself under/over the Vehicle after 7 operations....NO.

I'm kinda flying by the seat of my Pants on this one and it's a Matter of Priorities and $$.
I didn't find out about this mess until they were disassembling the Cab for Body Work/Pain.
By then, I had already Budgeted everything I had for this project, to the point of having to use my CC to pay for the Re-Upholstery. I'm sure some of you will "chime in" and tell me I'm nuts, but if I tackled everything that was "wrong" inside the Cab, while they have it open, I'd be spending ANOTHER $3K.
My only saving grace that comforts me is that they said they've seen worse.
BTW...I thought long & Hard about the Title for this post, to GRAB your attention, and it looks like it worked.

SO WHAT DO I WIN!!??

Actually, My Avatar and City info are incorrect.
I know live in Palm Desert (just East of Palm Springs), so yes I DID sneak in last night without permission and took pictures.
Then I told my Mechanic that I......
"wanted my wiring Harness ...JUST LIKE THIS ONE IN THE PICTURE"!

Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

It's funny, but for some reason EVERY truck I've worked on here in GA, has had the same mixture of wire nuts, lamp cord, speaker wire, and yes I swear, foil gum wrappers around a fuse.

I just put it down to the fact that most of these trucks were owned by blue collar guys who just needed the truck to work, didn't care if it was neat, or safe, just work.

I always have a good time playing "What does this switch do" when cleaning out under a dash. And for me it's that great feeling of accomplishment you get when you completely clean out the 40 years of trash, garbage and nastiness out of the cab of your 'new' truck.

Please tell me I read that wrong.......you are going to use your CC for seat upholstery but leave that fire hazard just like that......ARE YOU NUTZ! I would sit on the wire frame of the seat before I left that mess in place. I understand priorities but that is just plain foolish. Ask for help on the board here and someone many have a repairable harness out of a truck that they put in a new harness. Help this guy out before we read the next thread with the same tittle, except this time it in his truck ON FIRE!!!.

If I wasn't on the other side of the country I'd help you re-wire that thing.

Like someone else said though. If you have already bought the upholestry I'd spend my money on the wire and have that issue fixed.

Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

That's the reason I replaced all the forward light and underhood harnesses in my 1972 GMC.

Even weirder... is I had a 1967 C10 back in the 90's, that when I bought it the PO had used Romex house wire (also with wire nuts) to "supplement" the engine harness.

I'd also help out if closer to you. Maybe someone in your local area can assist in getting the worst of the mess made safe. It doesn't take much for an electrical system to malfunction and make for an extremely bad day.

That's not how you are supposed to repair the wiring? I'd better not show you my tail light harness!

Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

I wish I could take a picture of mine. Mine makes that look neat. I've got some wire nuts, some dangling switches, wires that are spliced 3-4 times in 10 feet and the pieces are different colors and gauges. The p.o. LOVED speaker wire and duct tape. God maybe my copilot, but he holds a fire extinguisher!

Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

I just put a harness in a 67 for my buddy that looks worse than that the p.o. had wired the entire truck with 14ga yellow wire and it did catch fire !! Surely someone on here lives close to this guy who has a harness that's better than what he has....

At least they ran different color wires, pulled a dash a part and the PO used 2 spools of black wire for everything.

Re: Warning: Picture not suitable for some!

A good friend of mine has a 1974 Crewcab that has a heater motor that sometimes works and sometimes don't.He keeps complaining that it doesn't work if its raining. Yesterday the heater motor didn't work so he bumped the fuse box while ckecking for blown fuses and it started working. Needless to say he is ordering a painless harness today. This old truck has had some really bad butchers ofter the wiring.

That being said.......
I told the Shop, that all the lighting/Gauges worked and I was OK with that.
I didn't have the extra $$'s for re-doing the wiring.
I came in today, to check the progress of putting it back together.
Ray (their resident Electrician), was sitting there with my Gauge Cluster in his Lap...RE-DOING THE WIRING!!!
He said that he couldn't put something like that, back together, knowing what was behind that cluster!
Their doing that at NO CHARGE to me.
I tell ya, if your ever in the Palm Springs area, and need Mechanical,Fabrication, Engine Work, Paint, Body Work.....
then your shop is...."The Shop"!

I attached some Before/After pics.
He wasn't done yet, but these guys RAWK!!!!!!
