Broken bolt, Easy out?

Somewere along the line, someone broke off one of my valve cover bolts. I bought one of the easy out kits with the drill bit looking thingies in it. Is there any trick to using them?

Thanks

No real trick that I know of. I had broken off an intake manfold bolt almost flush. It barely had any should sticking up. I used a friends easy out and it came right out. I feared the worst but it worked really well. Once it catches it will (should) back the bolt right out.

Good luck
Marc

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

cussing lots of cussing. Thats what I do and the bolt gets so scared it just comes out and runs.

But if all else fails grind it flush and drill it out and re thead it o and using heat and working it back and forth will do it every time. but to do this well you are going to need beer.

+1... centering the bit is very important!
Also keeping the drill/bit in a straight line with the broken bolt so that when it catches, it can spin the bolt out...

And soak first in a good penetrating oil...

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

You might be able to take a small punch and hammer and back it out.

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

If there's enough sticking out of the hole, weld a nut on it and back it out. If not, center punch and drill slow with cutting oil. Good luck.

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

ive had luck with the punch and hammer method. there shouldnt be alot of tension on the bolt, just put the punch on the edge and work it out.

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

If it isn't too late, STOP WITH THE EASY OUT!

Valve cover bolts aren't torqued to the bottom of the hole. I've taken many out with a flathead screwdriver. Usually there is a little "ear" left where the head broke off. See if you can hit that with the screwdriver and a light tap with your hand or a small hammer.

You'd be surprised how easy they come out. Especially the lower ones that are usually soaked in engine oil from a leaky valve cover gasket.

Re: Broken bolt, Easy out?

If there is a harbor freight or a good hardware store near you get yourself a 4 or 5 piece set of left cutting drills.Run them slow with a cordless drill and they will turn right out. I was a toolmaker and these saved me a lot of grief over the years.
