67 C20 250 ci to small block

My 67 C20 with a 250 & 4 speed w/granny gear just took a crap. It started billowing white smoke while warming up in my driveway. (Thank God) Anyway, if it is more than just a head gasket, I was thinking about having a small block put in it. Would a 350 work with the current transmission? Thanks for any help. My son-in law is going to work on it for me.

Re: 67 C20 250 ci to small block

I think the clutch z-bar is different for V8s and the V8 will sit back in the firewall with the motor mounts where they are. I always move them to the forward holes (factory V8 location). I guess that would mean driveshaft work, but it's a pain with the distributor back into the firewall. I also recommend swapping to V8 motor mount towers.

Re: 67 C20 250 ci to small block

Is there anything specific regarding a pre or post '87 engine & the mounts or towers?

Re: 67 C20 250 ci to small block

My truck was originally a 250ci/3 speed on the column. When I put the small block in it I left the motor mounts in the six cylinder position. This did make the engine set back further than a stock v8 truck but it also allowed me to use the original drive shaft. I am running an HEI distributor and even though it is close to the fire wall, there is enough room for it.

I'd put the sbc on the 6cyl mounts. It does fit and you won't have to mess with the driveshaft.
it might make it harder to work on the dist but you don't have to worry about moving your trans or crossmember or finding a z bar or new engine mounts.

Re: 67 C20 250 ci to small block

I had a 69 6 cyl to V8 and the 70 I have now was a 6cyl now has a V8. Both with HEI and both in the 6 cyl position. I think the distributors easier to get to than on some of the other p.i.t.a. cars Ive had.

Re: 67 C20 250 ci to small block

That is how my 67 was orginally a 250 4speed and they changed it to a 350 4 speed and left it in the orginal 6 cyl position. worked great even with HEI!!
