I have not done it personally but I have seen it done. I would add some sort of gusset to the inside to strengthen the sectioned frame.

Easier and faster to just get a SWB frame, has been discussed many times before. Last SWB frame I bought I gave a whooping $75 for. Plus it came with all the suspension, so I got more parts to store. Yay.

No way that would be easier or faster.

A good fabrication shop with qualified welder-fabricators can cut the frame, weld it back together and fish plate it in less than (1) day.

we stretch and customize tractor trailers where I work....we cut one frame rail on a 45 one way then cut the other on a 45 the opposite way. We install pieces in the frame that extend past the cuts a couple of feet and bolt in another crossmember if needed...
