What did I do to my tranny?

Hey guys,

So I put my truck into a ditch, if you could even call it that, a week or so.. I was able to get out in 4wd but when I was back on the road she wouldn't shift out of 1st gear.. I checked my transmission fluid which was very low & filled it up, unfortunately that didn't help at all. Its an '87 K10 with a rebuilt 350 & 700R4 trans. I don't know much about transmissions, or these old trucks in general so if anyone can help me out before I just get my wallet out & take it to my old man's transmission guy I would greatly appreciate it!

Re: What did I do to my tranny?

I'm thinkin you knocked somethin loose like the tv cable because putting it in 4 wheel drive and backing up doesn't ruin a transmission unless you were really spinnin the tires for a while with low fluid. But just to make sure, you dont still have it in low do ya. Any serious leaks that you can see? How does the fluid smell?

Re: What did I do to my tranny?

You broke the governor gear. been there done that!! On the side of the tranny there is a circular cover that's held on by a clip or just pressed in depending on the tranny. Its about 2.5 inches in diameter. Pull it off with a flathead screwdriver and behing it is a metal t looking thing that will pull out and the t part kinda has wings on it i guess you could call them. anyway if you pull it out there is a nylon gear on the end of it and i bet ya money its broke. I used to keep a spare one in my tool box when i was racing. GM parts houses carry the gears.

I checked for leaks & couldn't see any. I filled it up & went for a short slow drive to see if I could see any fluid after. The fluid looks fine. I haven't really checked anything else because I don't even know where to begin looking..

Thanks Monte, I'll look into that asap

What tranny you running? If it's a 350, make sure the vacuum line going to the shift solenoid on the right side didn't come loose. I've had that happen a couple of times to me.

I just took that out, looks fine though. The plastic piece on the end appears fine.

Then I would say you have something hung in the valve body. I'm not an expert at trannys though so don't take my work for it. I just know the things Ive ran across. Everything else i leave to my tranny person to take care of. LOL

Haha ok, thanks for the help anyway, I appreciate it! I'll probably be taking it to my guy if I can't figure it out soon. I still need to check my tv cable I guess

Re: What did I do to my tranny?

Yeah i dont think the 700r4 uses a vacuum modulator to shift i believe it is electric so maybe check wire connections? I'm sure someone will correct me on this.

Actually on second thought i think maybe its the tv cable that controls the shifts. Don't know for sure haven't owned a 700

I think its the tv cable, a few people have told me to check that.. I thought I did but now I'm wondering if I was checking something else.
