Broken Key in the ignition Help!

I was up north a couple weekends ago and had a bit to much of the sauce i believe and was gonna fire up my old rusty k5. i proceeded to turn the key but it didn't turn i looked at it and half the key was gone. its in the ignition i'm wondering what i have to do. can i get the other half out and get a new key made or should i get a new key and tumbler and how hard is this swap.

thanks guys!

Re: Broken Key in the ignition Help!

Why worry? Now you never have to worry about losing your key lol. Now you can jab a flat head in there and crank her every time. I'm just kidding, although if this was just a weekend warrior I would definitely do that! Same thing happened to our old suburban, I was a little feller. I remember watching my dad take the steering wheel off and replace the tumbler. He didn't seem to have any trouble. Maybe somebody else can tell you want exactly you need to do. Good luck!

Re: Broken Key in the ignition Help!

if you have another key you can buy discount dental type tools at harbor freight and try to carefully work the other half of the key out or you can buy a cheap wheel puller and make a compression tool for the steering wheel spring and take off the wheel and pop out the ignition cylinder and replace the lock.. its not difficult post here if you want the complete instructions how to do that

How far is it in there? Could you put a tiny, tiny amount of some super adhesive on the end of a flathead, let it dry and pull it out?

Re: Broken Key in the ignition Help!

Well if you can get it out, you can call a lock smith to trace the key for you.

Re: Broken Key in the ignition Help!

Pull the ignition.....I replaced my ignition and door locks and bought a kit that made them all keyed alike for less then $30.00. The tools needed, (Wheel puller and compressor tool) were less then $20.00 on ebay. It's worth it to only have one key do everything. Not to mention you probably need a new ignition anyway since it didn't turn in the first place causing you to break the key. Mine locked up and I never had a door key so it made my decision for me. The worse part of the whole project was taking my doors apart to replace the locks.
