700r4 question
I bought a truck with a 1983 700r4. It's already slipping, won't shift into overdrive until about 70 mph and leaks at about every spot possible. I've heard that pre-1987 700r4's are junk. Can anyone tell me if this tranny can be rebuilt to stand 400 + hp or should I look for a later model.

Look for a later model. They are not hard to find and directly interchange.

I believe that the parts of the older 700R4's can be upgraded to the newer stuff, I would think a call to a good transmission builder would answer your question(s). I would call Bowtie Overdrives, Bohler (sp?) Transmissions or your favorite local shop. I want to say it has something to do with the clutches and other internals being weaker, but dont quote me on that. I have a 90' 700r4 with a basically stock rebuild and it has taken all my bolt-on LT1 has thrown at it. (No towing/heavy loads yet though)

The older ones can be built to with stand more power, but it may cost a little more. Seems to me there were around 100 pages of TSBs issued the first few years of the 700. Reputable shops should be able to build one that is strong. The only thing I know is that the one with two valve bodies are the most problematic. The most critical thing of all is getting the TV cable right, otherwise you can burn up even the best built 700.
