Re: Remote Start
They work great on fuel injected motors, not so much on carbs. DO NOT use one with a standard transmission.

Re: Remote Start
If you had an automatic transmission and used a door lock solenoid to pump the carb a couple times before the remote start was activated ... if you had a multi-channel keyless/remote system the solenoid could be on a separate channel as the remote start. Or set to pump before the starter was activated.

Re: Remote Start
I have a remote start in my 1984 GMC 3500. The remote start came with the Viper alarm. THe truck also has an NOS Rochester 4 barrel carb. I have not used the truck much this winter but I did use it in the fall. I would have to pump the accelerator like 4-5 x after shutting the truck off to make sure that the remote would work the next morning.
THere were a few times where I had to run out to the truck bc it wouldnt get enough gas from the carb. Its a good idea but not 100% perfect like fuel injection. Before u do get a remote start, 1. make sure truck is automatic and 2. make sure your carb is working flawlessly. |

Re: Remote Start
I have my remote start on my carb'd truck. Works pretty good once it's been started and ran some in the morning. It helps that I have a mini starter that whirls it over quickly.

Re: Remote Start
Ha, and if its having trouble idiling without your foot on the pedal make yourself an "IDLE STICK" which is a stick you cut so it wedges between the seat and pedal and keeps its idling a little higher

Re: Remote Start
I had a remote start on my 5 speed jeep for years and it never gave me a problem, you just have to be smart enough to buy the manual transmission remote start. It won't start if the vehicle is in gear. I also never left my jeep in gear.

Re: Remote Start
I've got one on my 90 burb but it's a tbi not carbed. It's a combo alarm/remote start. 4 button setup that alows me to remotely start/stop the engine, lock/unlock the doors even turn on the rear defroster on the tailgate window.
Oh and if I hit the lock and auxillary button at the same time I can remotely set off my train horns!!!! Works great for finding the burb in a parking lot, plus scaring the daylights outta people walking by at the time.

Re: Remote Start
I partial agree ... my motivation wouldn't be from laziness but for the coolness factor of making remote start work properly when it's not a typical install.

Re: Remote Start
I'd have to agree
I had a viper alarm with door poppers on a carb but the installers said it might work after driving it but not from cold start (I'd like it to use it to keep it running after a manual start tho now) some auto starts will keep engine going after a drive if you press the start button while still running.then remove key easier to change it to tbi

Re: Remote Start
it's always fun to show off my ol' '86 remote starting though. people always freak out when they see an old truck fire off with no one in it.

Re: Remote Start
I hit the button twice and it starts the truck lol.
Doesn't work in the morning when it's cold, but if I crank the truck and let it build some temperature it fires off 90% of the time with the remote. |

Re: Remote Start
I've got remote start on my '78 4x4 auto tranny, carb'd.
It works less than half the time under normal conditions. I only have it because it came with the alarm system I bought. If I want it to work properly and start up with the remote, then it has to have been running recently. There are only a couple advantages to having it. 1.) I can manually start it up, then hit the remote start button, and then take the key out and it will keep running for a set period of time. This means that in the morning, I can fire up the truck and leave for work in my other truck. The old chevy will run for 12 minutes with the doors locked and no key in it. I can change this to 2 minutes, 5 minutes, whatever. This is an easy convenient way to run the truck for a few minutes every few mornings. 2.) For the same purposes above, I can at least TRY the remote start in the mornings. On a cold morning when the truck hasn't been run overnight, there's a low likely hood that it will start right up with the remote start, but it doesn't hurt to try, and every once in a while, it will work. |
