How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
I was looking at the hood on my 61 and it's pretty rusted. I think it would take me a few weeks of messing around to get it to look ok. I'm not a great welder or body guy, but I really like learning and I have a ton of pactence. So while I was selling other stuff on ebay I ran across a hood that looks like it's in great shape. I e-mailed the guy and he called me within about 15 minuets. He gave me a price that I thought was really high so I told him I would bid on it and see. What would be a reasonable price? That syle hood isn't really easy to find so I'm not sure what it's worth.

If it was kind of blue he did. I thought it was about that much. There was a yard in Willams that I used to stop in on my way back when my parents lived in Redding. I'm going up there in a few weeks maybe I'll stop in again to see what he has. I haven't had to go to wrecking yards for a few years maybe I'll start going that again.

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
hey surfdaddy,
The price of that hood depends on the buyer. Not a lot of people like the GMC hood, but the few that do or know how rare they are likely to give steep prices. I would say if you can get it for $200 or less, go for it. Anything more than that is too much, in my opinion. As long as the mesh grill is good, the rest of the hood is the exact same as the chevy 60-61. maybe if you can find a cheaper chevy one, you can crop out the front piece. I'm not sure how hard that would be though....

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
I bid on it. He wants 95 buck for shipping I told him I would pick it up if I won. I'm not all that keen on buying stuff on ebay (don't know the tricks) so I'll play it out and see how things go. I'm learnig though, I told my dad that would sell all our sal****er fishing gear that we aren't using anymore. 45 reels and 25 rods. All custom and high end stuff that we used doing the Marlin and Tuna tournaments before my dad retired. 27 years of dealing with boats and boat owners. I never got paid once only paid out.

Wow!!! I did't realize that this hood could go for so much!!! ebay, 60-61 GMC hood went for 365.79 I looks like a almost perfect hood though. I guess I'll have to look around. The last time I bought any sheet metal hoods were 25-50 bucks and fenders were 15 -35 bucks. Yieks!!!

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
Yeah, the early GMC hoods go for big bucks because they are so unique, and in the past, lots of guys swapped to the later hoods and pitched the old GMC hoods. Your style is extremely uncommon because of the interconnected grilles.
If you've got a Mig, or if you're considering getting a cheap 110v Mig, use the hood to practice on. If the inner structure is still solid, and the rust-out damage is limited to just the outer skin, I think you can do some patch work and save what you've got. I'd do the CLR and a Scotchbrite trick and see what's exactly is surface rust and what's a rust-through. Your hood has the typical rust that you see on a truck that's from the coast. There's enough guys here on the site, and somebody might have a clapped out GMC hood that they might be willing to cut apart and get you the section you need.

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
I started looking for a hood just to save some time, I figured it would take me three weeks to strip and repair the hood so I just got side tracked by stumbling on this one. I bought a flux core wire welder to repair the sheet metal when I got the truck. I planned on repairing everything instead of replacing from the beginning. That's part of the learning and fun I have doing this anyway.

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
You've got a welder, so that's a big plus. I would recommend getting a gas kit to convert your flux core to gas. It makes a huge difference in the weld quality. Flux will work for doing patches, but it's not a great weld. Flux works great for guys working outside because it isn't affected by wind, like a gas-shielded weld, but the weld isn't as nice.
I really like your truck. You don't see many of the early (60/61) GMCs around. I think they look so cool when they're restored back to 100% stock. Yours has the right color combo, too.

Re: How much would a 61 GMC hood go for
I'll try with upgrading to Miller or Linclon tips and wire. If that won't work out then I can bring it in to work and one of the guys I work with can tig weld it. I would rather try and do it myself than bug somone to do it on the side
