Starter Removal 1969 GMC
I have a 1969 GMC I use for plowing. I'm pretty sure the starter is dead.. it clicks and extends the drive gear into the flywheel, but won't turn it over. Funny thing is, it doesn't retract the gear.. only when I move the flywheel by hand a little bit does the drive gear go back into the housing.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, there are two bolts and a stud with a nut on top. The nut is missing and I've got the two bolts removed, but its hung up on something. I can't clearly see the top of the starter to tell. This is not the original 350, but I believe its either a 350 or 305 from an 80's Camero. So, it may be a little different, but I've given up for the day. Tired of laying in the snow.. figured I'd post here and see anyone had any ideas. |

Re: Starter Removal 1969 GMC
EXACT thing happened on my 72 GMC. Removed starter and bench tested it with battery that was in truck and didn't do anything. Bench tested with new battery and worked perfectly. Replaced battery, put same starter back on truck, and it starts every time now.
If you have a manual transmission, 2 bolts go in facing rear of truck, 1 goes in facing front of truck. GOOD LUCK!

Re: Starter Removal 1969 GMC
That's it! I didn't notice the rear bolt. Its in an awkward position, and the plow frame and push plates don't help either. There were two wires, the +12vdc wire and another one (from the switch I guess). Other than the +12vdc post, there are two smaller posts.. one labeled "S" and the other "R". The other wire went to the "S" post, and nothing on the "R" one. Is that right? Its a NAPA starter.
Going to have it tested tomorrow morning. The wire connection for that other wire looked questionable anyway, so I might get lucky and this thing will test out OK. |

Yes, the wire going to the "S" should be from the purple wire on the ignition switch. I would definately check the battery though. My starter was doing exactly what you described and a new battery fixed it.

I agree check the battery, it may have only enough power to engauge the flywheel and then falls off to nothing

Re: Starter Removal 1969 GMC
Had a charger on it for a an hour or two when it wouldn't turn over. Didn't seem to help, but I'll check the voltage.

Auto Zone and O'Rielly's will check the battery and starter. You probably will have to leave the battery for a little while so they can charge it before they test it.

Re: Starter Removal 1969 GMC
I had my charger on the battery for several hours and showed good voltage with no load (didn't have a way to check it under load). I guess when it got real cold out for several days it trashed the battery.

Re: Starter Removal 1969 GMC
The S on the solenoid is for the wire going to the switch.
The R post is for the resistor bypass wire if you are running points. It allows the coil to have a full 12 volts when you are cranking the engine to start it. It isn't needed if you have an HEI or other electronic distributor. |
