Dana 60's power lok vs maximum traction
Seems that the dana 60 came with either a power lok or a maximum traction option availability. What's the option number for maximum traction in a 3/4 ton...G80? Who has more info on a power lok...looking for more info. Maximum traction has spring kit and clutches.

My 70 has the max traction option listed, and I've identified it as a spicer powr-loc. I obtained a service manual from drivetraindirect for a dana 60/70 powr-loc. I don't believe there was two different traction aids available in the dana60. Of course the 10/12 bolts came with a type, and the eaton ones had detroit lockers also called no-spin. Hope this helps. I'm at work I'll be able to check the glove box door around 0030 for the RPO code.

Well I have a dana 60 from a 71 GMC 3/4 ton that has a clutch pack posi ... and I think it said maximum traction on the id sticker when I got that one. I have a power lok from a 71 3/4 Chev this past weekend, option G87 I saved the sticker from that glove box... and have a couple detroit lockers ( no-spin ) from eaton - corporation rear ends option G86. I cant remeber what maximum traction was and are they just clutch pack posi's in 3/4 tons. My GM overhaul manuals have decent exploded pic of power lok but does not show a 3/4 ton clutch pack posi. Parts books dont list a maximum traction option number either.

Let's see here...
From the GM Parts Book: G80 Rear Axle - Positraction G86 Rear Axle - No Spin G87 Rear Axle - Power Lock G80 is for the 1/2 Tons. G86 for the Eaton 3rd member... G87 is for the Dana 60's The Chevrolet Overhaul manual says that there are four optional Positraction differential units: Chevrolet (8 1/2" Ring Gears), Eaton (car & truck), Borg Warner (probably cars) and Dana PowerLok. Also says that No Spin was optionally in stalled in 5200 or 7200 lb. axle housings. Only thing it says about the Borg Warner is that when it wears out it must be replaced with either a Chev or and Eaton Positraction Diff unit. If it isn't the No Spin you must have the PowerLok. Check the Overhaul manual, it has exploded pics of the Eaton Posi, Chevrolet Posi, PowerLok, and the NoSpin. -Roger

I have a detroit locker in my Dana 60 and its the 2nd Dana 60 with a detroit locker differential I have owned. The first being out of a 69 Charger. This locker unit itself is date coded 1962 . Had no idea they made them that far back. I have no idea what it came out of but its a 30 spline unit and was in a 8 lug rear end sitting in a pile in the junkyard. Iv'e used clutch type and lockers in 9 inch ford and dana 60's and to thell you the truth I prefer clutch type. I cant hear this one engage and disengage but I can feel a bit of clicking around very tight corners or when doing U turns. It grabs like a son of a ***** though !

Oh I get it . Your'e asking if Dana's or Eatons came with GM style coil spring posi's. Dana's have springs but theyr'e bellville type not coil type. Since the only thing that 3/4 tons came with were Dana 60's and Eatons the answer would have to be no. Remember that Dana and Eaton were outside contracters with their own systems. Later 14 bolt GM corporate positraction may have been the same. Never had one apart.

Here's a page from Dana's own publication # x510-8 dsd which covers their axles from 1967-78. However, if you read the various charts in the book, ONLY the Powr-Loc was available on Chev C20/GMC 2500 for the 67-72 period. The Trac-Loc was used on vans in 74 and later.
