Average cost to rebuild axles?

I have a Dana 60 front and GM 14 bolt rear axle. They have been sitting for 7 years. A local maintenance shop wants to charge me $1,100 for labor to rebuild both axles, make custom parking brake brackets and everything, including sandblasting and painting both axles. I have to pay for parts. I know they do good work but does $1,100 for labor seem high to do everything?

Not really, considering it's probably 2-3 days labour to do everything. Just to blast/paint 2 bare housings would probably run you a couple hundred bucks. Seems high at the outset, but he's probably only charging you $40-50 an hour to do the work.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

Last time I shredded an axle shaft I had to replace the differential and ring gear as well... job was about $1400 for everything, $1100 for labor sounds fair if they'll be tearing down every seal and piece of it and doing paint work.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

They are tearing both axles down to just the housing, cleaning out the inside and replacing every seal, bolt and doing the brakes so they are ready to bolt on my truck. The only thing they are paying for is the primer/paint.

Grab some books and saw horses and do them in your own garage, take your time and learn something new. Use the $1100 elsewhere in the truck.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

I don't really know anything about axles nor do I have the time to learn right now. I would rather pay someone but I wasn't sure if 1100 was to much.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

Is there something broken? The Dana 60 front and 14 bolt full-float rear have a reputation of being bullet proof and are probably just fine as they sit unless they suffered some kind of severe abuse. I would probably clean them up, put fresh oil in them and replace any leaking seals if applicable. Then I would stick them under the truck and run them as is, unless, I knew there was a problem. I guess I'm just cheap.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

Well the front axle shaft is bad and all the brake parts need replaced. I was going to get a master rebuild kit for both axles and have them install it.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

I had the bearings in my Dana 60 replaced for $160, I did most of the work stripped the thing down to bare bones and delivered the parts and the axle to the shop. Only one place in Maine that will touch a Dana axle. I feel I got a good deal, we will see when I actually put the power to it.

Re: Average cost to rebuild axles?

I just did a ring gear and posi in my truck. parts with the install kit was around 730. I aslo installed new moser axles ... that added an extra 275. average labor cost around town was 250-325 if you bring the rear end to them. since you said 1100 to rebuild with you buying the parts, go somewhere else
