Need some help...
I am new, but you guys have been great. My dilemma is this: I have a 350 crated chevy motor...about 9 years old...in great condition. The guy I bought it from rather rigged all the wiring. The original harness is there, but on the inside he put a three guage cluster with water, heat etc. He also put a kill switch under the fender. THERE ARE WIRES GOING EVERYWHERE!
I am tearing down the engine to paint, but not taking it out of car. How hard is it to rewire this thing with this kind of engine in it? I would rather rewire and make it look nice and know it is done right. THanks! |

Re: Need some help...
The best way, without seeing what you have already, would probably be to replace the wiring for each item routing it as desired to get the effect you're looking for.
If you're unhooking everything to clean and paint a roll of 1" masking tape, sharpie and digital camera are your friends. Take a picture of everything as detailed as possible, every wire you remove wrap a piece of masking tape around and mark where it goes. When you go to reinstall just replace as needed. Remember that with wire it is better for it to be too long than too short. If you make it long you can always cut down to make it fit the way you want. Perhaps it would be easier to purchase a new underhood harness from any of the reputable suppliers and be done with it. |

Re: Need some help...
If it is the underhood stuff that is a nightmare you may be better off just buying a new harness for the engine compartment.
They are fairly simple but it can be rather time consuming to go through all the mess and replace or repair what is there. |

Re: Need some help...
My 64 was the first vehicle I wired. I did need help with a couple of items and between this site and the hamb and a experienced friend I got through it with no issues. Bought 2days. Its easy, but you will get stumped, be patient and work through it.
The tuff part is we dont know your skill level... not a bash, but it could be real tuff if a guy has very little mechenical or electrical knowledge. Not sure my 18 year old could get through it without alot of help...

Re: Need some help...
I am going to need a lot of help...
BUT THE REASON I WANT TO DO THIS is because the PO rigged it in such a way that I feel that I wouldn't know where to start to trouble shoot the thing. If I wire it correctly then I know I shouldn't have issues...Where to get an under the hood harness?? |

Re: Need some help...
Here is a thread on wiring harnesses: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...hlight=harness
How about uploading some pictures of the problem areas you are talking about. If the wiring is bad in the cab, and underhood you probably should consider a complete new harness. Doesn't make a lot of sense to just do the underhood harness if the cab harness has also been comprimised. |

Re: Need some help...
Here is a company that I have used for over 20 years, good prices and customer service, I linked to the harnesses.
http://www.classicparts.com/Wiring-H.../products/205/ if the underhood harnesses are jacked you would need a headlight harness, parking light harness and possibly the engine harness ( goes to the starter) The first two are pretty easy to replace if you just get the harness and do it one connection at a time.
