2x4 vs 4x4 rear ends

My boss has a posi with 3.08 gears off his stock 1980 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4.
I was looking to put it in my 1984 chevy silverado 4x2 with 3.08 open diff.

do any of you know if the 4x4 ring and pinion are the same as the 2x4s?

Re: 2x4 vs 4x4 rear ends

Should be... I look at websites like Randy's Ring and Pinion when I need an answer to a rearend question. I found out that the axles will interchange from a 2x4 to a 4x4 axle. My local wrecking yard has lots of 4x4 parts, but not a lot of 2x4 stuff. I can get a 3.08 rearend for next to nothing to replace my 4.10 geared one. All I have to do is put my axle shafts in it.

Re: 2x4 vs 4x4 rear ends

Trans makes a HUGE difference in rearend ratio, the 700R4 will like something like a 3.73 where as a TH350 will like more of a 3.08 or likes...

My truck is a big block with TH400 running stock size tires (31's) and the 3.73's seem perfect for off the line power with highway cruising gear. Best of all worlds for me.

Be sure to install a locker if you are opening the rearend up!

Re: 2x4 vs 4x4 rear ends

Still need to know tire size.

If you have a low end cam and stockish converter then the 3.08's will get good mileage and decent power, I personally would still go 3.73's and posi.
