How does my cab compare...

Wondering if the amount of work that is required here is more or less what you guys normally see for these trucks. My dad keeps telling me that it isn't that bad. Guess we'll find out soon enough. I especially love all of the steel wool crammed inside the rocker panel. It complemented the bondo nicely

Re: How does my cab compare...

My guess is that you got more than your fair share of rust, but then again, what do I know, I'm from California, and we don't see extreme rust, usually. I hope you're handy with a torch and a welder. Keep us posted!

Re: How does my cab compare...

All depends on how much you want to fix, being in Florida you should be able to pick up a decent cab that would just need little repair panels and rockers rather than a majority of a complete floor. For around here in NY, thats not that bad, but I am currently on night #3 of a complete floor, kick panels, lower front and rear pillars, rockers, cab corners, and visor panel on my cab... I should have just gotten a western cab, but its a learning experience.

Re: How does my cab compare...

My friends just cut my floor out this weekend and did some patching just like DustyC10

I don't know if you can see that the floor was swiss cheese.

The firewall and all inside the vent boxes were all rusty due to the water running down the windshield along the seal.

Re: How does my cab compare...

Well I'm from the west as well, but it looks like you would be better off just finding a cleaner cab. I would bet that if you were to strip the paint off you would find a lot more rust. I hope it works out well.

Re: How does my cab compare...

if it were mine i would check over the inner cowl area really good see if it is rusted out, and also around the wiper motor area, also up around the windsheild area.if these areas are that rusty too then, i vote better cab if not then, grab the cutoff wheel and have at it!! it's only metal, and so what if you mess up, ok woops, we do over!! good luck with this and hang in there and enjoy your build time with your dad.blessing to you and your family....don

Re: How does my cab compare...

looks a lot like mine . you could put in a whole new floor or just use patch panels. depends on you time and money . iam using patch panel takes a lot of time to fit but gives me something to do besides lay around a get fat watching tv.

Re: How does my cab compare...

Very fixable. Iwould just use patch panels. Its a lot more work doing the entire floor. That rust is not bad in my opinion.assuming that the roof and cowl are ok. rockers are cheap to buy and get the outer floor extension. cab supports, maybe the cab corners? can't tell from photos. Your looking at $100.00 +/- per side in parts. might need a little more if the patch doesn't cover it.

Re: How does my cab compare...

It's bad. i would find a new cab, there's still some of those here in FL (especially up in your area) for a lot less than it'd cost to fix that one. I "fixed" mine and it wasn't nearly that bad, then had to re-do again 10 yrs later. If you do decide to repair, acid dip and/or media blast and you might be able to keep it from coming back. Remember, it's what you can't see that's really the worst problem....

Re: How does my cab compare...

Overall, it's probably average, on a national scale....factoring in the good ones on the west coast and in Texas/AZ/etc., then adding in the rust belt relics and the outright doomed ones in New England and along the east coast.

Here's mine: The grey one (first three pix) is "tradin' material"; the red one is my replacement. It needs a rocker and some minor repair on the floor/kick panel area, as well as corners.

The other one? Just needs to be clipped at the windshield posts and across the floor, from door to door and then a replacement piece in stalled. It has already had rockers, floor pans and kick panels, but the shop used the automotive adhesive. Looking at the bottom, it's tacky. It would also become an area subject to containing mud and salt/sand mixture and lead to future rust-out. I'll get a pic.

I am amazed by what can be repair and saved! Here in California it'll be resting at a pick a part. Makes me feel better about my rusted 68 c10. Some pics of rusted trucks here.

Re: How does my cab compare...

Its a lot of work. just decide if you want to put that much work into it. I have done some and am tired of the brown stuff. I have a current project truck that came from AZ and it is so much nicer to not have to cut and weld for once. It is good experience to have though. If your young go for it. I'm old so...not in the mood lol.

Re: How does my cab compare...

Wow...appreciate all of the responses guys! My dad really wants to get going on it before he gets too sick to do anything else. He's been building/restoring cars and trucks for a lot of years. We have all of the necessary equipment in the shop to do the work and will see how it goes. I remember a few years back I went to talk to the owner at the Goodmark installation center in Cleveland, Georgia and he told me I'd be looking at $2,500 to have it back to brand new and in primer. Needless to say I didn't have the money.

Re: How does my cab compare...

Looks about average to me. Those are all key rust spots on these trucks. You can't always take Desert truck into account, as we don't all live down south nor do we have access to those mint rust free trucks those Southern guy are privy to. They should consider themselves lucky

At the very least you're looking at a few $100 in patches and then time of yours, so not a big deal. What's a rust free cab go for these days? $500 r so...depending on location I guess. So what's more important..you're time or money?
