I am replacing the stock mechanical fuel pump on my 350. Do I use gasket sealer, or just the gasket?

Use sealer on both sides of the gasket.

You shouldn't need it, but it won't hurt anything.....

Sealer. A light coating of the sealer you normally use on other gaskets should do fine.

Make sure That the push rod is up in place so you can get the pump lever in under the end and not binding on the side of the push rod. You can slide the push rod up with your finger or a screw driver but usually it doesn't stay long. I usually push it up and then slip the lever in under the end and often use the end of the lever to slide the push rod back up with a bit of a rocking motion. A lot of guys take out one of the two bolts on the bottom front of the block (where the tri-5 motor mount bolts went and use a longer bolt to hold the push rod but be gentle if you do and only screw it in finger tight against the push rod so as not to bend the push rod. I have had to follow behind a guy who overtightened the bolt and bent the push rod. It isn't fun to explain to the mechanic how you screwed up your engine by trying to work on it yourself. Luckily I was the mechanic who had to work on it that time and not the owner.

I won't own an engine that leaks or seeps anywhere. I use this stuff on all paper gaskets, including fuel pump, timing cover, etc and it works. Just a light smear on both sides of the gasket. Use your finger to spread it smooth and thin.

My dad and my grandfather before him used the same stuff. It's been around forever. No tool box is complete without a tube.

I do agree Firefighter. I use this stuff on every gasket also. you can even get it in a jar with a brush.

I like the Permatex Indian Head hi-tack and Aviation brush-on sealants.

Gasket sealer not needed but sure does help with keeping gasket in place while wrestling with the pump to get it in place.

Slop some grease (clean) on the end of the rod before you shove it
up into place. The grease will hold the rod for a minute or two, giving
you time to get the pump in place.

Another tip-----Roll the engine over so the cam lobe is away from the pump rod and it will be much easier to start the pump bolts. I think TDC on no.1 compression is the place.
