Freshen up door strikers? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i just got my freshly primered doors back on my truck..but i dont want to put the ugly rusted looking door strikers back on like that. is there a cheap methhod to restoring them to the original look? im sanding down my door handles this weekend and shooting them gloss black, so they will get sprayed too if i cant find another option.

also, my front 2 door windows are super hard to roll up and down..does this mean my window regulators are shot?

The door latches are zink coated. You could treat the rust and paint them with new flat silver paint or paint them what ever color you want. Your windows roll up hard possibly for a couple of reasons. Your weatherstrip could be warn out or your regulators need lubrication. The regulators may be rusted and if you can't loosen them they will need replace them. WES

WD-40 worked wonders on mine. I also like PB Blaster as a good alternative to WD-40. I think that PB might be better for some applications.

I use PB Blaster more for freeing up rusted stuck fasteners than as a lubricant and WD-40 as more of a Lube. I use CRC as lube.

I've used the spray lithium grease on window rollers, it can be messy as heck, but it works great and lasts forever.

x2 on white lithium grease ... WD-40 is a water dispersant (thus the WD in WD-40) and is not a very effective long term lubricant.

X3 on lithium grease. WD 40 is good for cleaning things up but it doesnt stay there very long. I cleaned both my regulators up and they worked much better but I ended up replacing them, the new ones arent that much and they sure are smoother than the old originals!

thanks guys, ill try that sprayable lithium grease. i goggled it and i seen permatex carries some so im assuming o reilly should carry it. ill try it out this weekend.

any advice what kind of paint on the strikers? i know whatever i paint it with will scratch off from the latch hitting it. i was thinking my one stage tractor paint i will be using for my door handles, but im liking the idea of painting them silver...so rattle can is as expensive as im going with that lol

Eastwood, and others, have a paint that is supposed to look like cadmium plating. You could just clean them up, sand where needed, then degrease them before spraying them with the cadmium paint.

As for your windows not going up/down easily, I also had a problem with mine. I'd have to pull it up with one hand while cranking with the other. It didn't matter which one....they both were a problem. So, when we pulled the doors off, we gutted them because I have new regulators and door relays, including all of the weather strip, fuzzies and stuff. I will be sure to use some white grease when I reassemble mine.

mine were bad...as in - i can turn about 1/4 down, then it gets tough..then about 1/2 to 3/4 i literally had to use a hammer hitting the window crank to get it to crank lol
