Brakes pulling to right - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok guys.
I have my 66 long bed, all four brakes are drums. We just opened all of them up and looked them over. They're all pretty new, new drums, shoes.
I just put a new front coil in and the truck looks balanced again.

Every time I am driving when I apply the brakes the truck pulls to the right. Since I'm new to drums, where to do I start? Do I start looking at the right side brakes and adjusting the little wheel on the bottom to loosen the brake?

Could only one rear brake, such as the rear right make it pull to the right?

I would start by adjusting the front. Jack the front up, put it on jack stands, adjust the little wheel till the wheel does not spin. The turn it back till the wheel spins with a little drag. Then do the same to the other side.

Another thing that makes brakes grab more on one side is, if the brake cylinder leaks at all. Any brake fluid in the drum will cause it to catch.

Might want to also take a look at the shoes themselves (while inspecting the hydraulics) and make sure you have one each primary and secondary shoe on each side.

At least you know it pulls to the same side everytime

With mine, it was a crapshoot which ditch you were headed for.

How little drag are you talking about ? Do you just back off the adjuster untill you can turn the wheel by hand, or untill it actually makes a freewheeling revolution after you spin it ?

The amount of drag is different for everybody. Just like when you tighten bolts, everyone has a different feel. You do not want to exert a lot of pressure to make the wheel turn, yet you do not want it to spin freely. Does that help?

If this was your issue, that wheel would skid easier than the rest.

Its most likey in the front right.
