ive got just a round k+n filter in my stock housing. flipped the lid over to fit it in. looks ok, but makes a big throttle response difference. also like how u can clean and reoil instead of throwing out. definetley worth it.
my 2 cents.

Can anyone say with some certainty that the open airfilter makes performance suffer since it is sucking hot air? Or is that not a correct assumption?

it depends on how restrictive the air intake it. on my f150 i went to and open conical air filter instead of the air box and eliminated the cold air ducting. lots more power even tho it's sucking h ot air now. the stock airbox was too restrictive. the best bet maybe to go to a cowl hood, or go old school and have louvers punched in the hood to let the hot air out.

I used to have a K&N but the truck had a hard time warming up on cold mornings. I made a straight trade with a guy for the stock setup with the stovepipe coming off the exhaust manifold. MUCH better performance for me.

That is why you use an aftermarket for summer and stock for winter.

I have used both on my camaro. the k&n air filter didnt help much. I did use a K&n oil filter a few times when the store was out of mobil 1's. They seemed to work fine.

A while back the PORSCHE magazine Excellence did an in depth analysis of using aftermarket air filters for performance improvements using a dyno. The results were ZILCH for the K&N filter verses a regular air filter from PIX, PUrolator, etc. Now some guys may say they have seen and felt some significant performance improvements using K&N. I changed over on a Porsche 928S4 and saw nothing. I also did the same for a 97C5 Corvette and saw nothing. Can't imagine how it would make a big improvement justifying their cost with a Chev V8 running a carb unless the existing air filter is clogged. What could help is doubling up on the stock air filter housing throats and then pulling the air in from in front of the rad support getting much cooler air but not ready to try that yet.

the only oil problem i've heard of i on vehivles equipped with a MAF sensor. the oil is pulled off the filter and coates the sensor. it just needs to be cleaned carefully. otherwise i haven't heard of any other problems.

I installed a K&N air filter and felt no noticible difference....i am also running a 14x3 chrome open-element air cleaner. Hot Rod did a test of various air cleaners not too long ago, and they were all the 14x3 size. To get the flow bench to show any restriction at all, they had to put duct tape over 1/2 the air cleaner. Even then, all the filters flowed around 3,000 CFM, plus or minus a few. Even the Purolator paper filter they tested was in 200 cfm of the K&N. When your carb is only rated to 600cfm, there proably isn't going to be much of a difference unless you are going from a tiny or dirty air filter to an aftermarket one.
