Narrowing a rear end

how hard is it to narrow a 10 bolt rear end I need it to measure 54 inches it measures 57 now from the backing plates. Do I have o get new axles or can you re spline the existing ones. Does anyone know or have an idea what this will cost?

Re: Narrowing a rear end

not worth the money or effort compared to a pair of new wheels with a bit more backspacing

Will this be close enough?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Your 57" measurement provided.... Are you saying you need a housing 1.5" narrower per side to achieve your 54" goal?

The axles will most likely need to be custom built to length unless you get lucky & something already existing will work (GM axles don't have enough material to allow cutting & re-splining).

From what I've read on the net during my research, Caprice rear housings are around 61-61.5" & the Impala SS is slightly wider (3/8 per side, .750" total). That would put the housing right around the same width as a 6x-69 GM truck (62" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface). A 2nd GEN f-body 10-bolt (or 12-bolt) would be narrower @ around 60" & a possible candidate but has a car pattern. The T/A housings from these years even had disc brakes.

Yes I need 54 inches so my wheels will work, so it looks like I need some new axles

Re: Narrowing a rear end

The 88-98 housings are about .750" wider per side vs. 71-87's. The 71-87's are .750" wider vs. the 6x-69's. Sounds line the 62" wheel mounting surface to WMS of the 6x-69 truck housing would be the right dimension or narrowing your current unit.

What year truck? What size & back-space on the wheels in question?

The x is a generic figure in the 6x-69 example. Such as 67-69...
