my 1964 swb fleet gmc

Hi all, i been lurking for a while and decided to finally post,

i have had my truck since i was 17 years old(for over 20 years), i bought it for $300.00 after working a summer to earn it, when i bought it it had a small I6 with a 4 speed with 2nd gear gone

the rear end was blown up due to the PO using 2x3 channel as lift blocks and they slid out and pogo'd the truck on the drive shaft.

i got a rear end and drive shaft out of a 63 gmc for $100.

ran it for about 2 years until the valves rattled so bad and couldn't be adjusted any more so i put in a 350 out of a 79 camaro with long tube headers and an Edelbrock intake and carb and a th400 trans from a 69 impala ran it for another 2-3 years then it sat at my my grandparents house for about 15 years doing some international traveling and then moved from California to Alabama.

now at 37 i started to work on it after having it shipped from California to Alabama last summer.

when i started to work on it i found alot of parts were scavenged, the missing components consisted of

Radiator
drive pulleys
water pump
alternator
all accessory brackets
intake
carb
trans mount
headers
seats
shift knob

i have been working on her for a few months now and can show you a before and after. but it is not near complete.

i never had front or rear bumpers for it so i am trying to decide if i should go with chrome or painted, or do a custom roll pan front and rear.

it is far from perfect, with some dents here and there but i removed all the old crappy paint and old bondo and primed it grey and painted it flat black.

i plan to leave it flat black

Thanks

rogue!

Welcome to the board from toasty SW New Mexico. I definitely have to agree on the nice stance. What did you do to get it sitting like that?

Re: my 1964 swb fleet gmc

it was like that when i bought it, from what i can tell he cut the front springs and removed some of the rear leaf's . the rear leaf's are still in the bed of the truck, but it rides bumpy as hell so i am looking at some air bags or something that might soften the ride but keep the stance.

Re: my 1964 swb fleet gmc

feel free to throw in your .02 cents on what i should do with her,

from both a safety stand point and from a drivability stand point,

it has a 79 camaro gas tank in the rear end of her works well if i ever get a bumper with a flip down license plate bracket.

i should have some more pics up tomorrow,

i know first off i need to get rid of those 20 year old tires, i drove it around the block and i felt like i was on square tires! ! !

and this week i plan to go thru all the brakes to check hoses and master cylinder,

when i got the truck off the car carrier there was no Brake fluid in the master and the pedal was on the floor,

i put fluid in the master to see where it leaked out but have yet to find a puddle.

i have the single line master cylinder and i know some people recommend to swap it for a dual line.

anything else?

Duel master and a power brake booster, it's easy to do and you can get it from a donner vehicle. I did mine in less than 1 day, got the booster from an 84 pu so allot of them will work. Allot of more knowing people on here than me and their great to help just ask.

Re: my 1964 swb fleet gmc

best thing i can tell you is get it safe, then drive it and make a realistic plan for what you want her to be, then break that idea up into manageable sections and dig in, but IMO I would always keep her running so you can take her around the block at least and stoke the c10 fire and keep your momentum going.

Welcome and good luck!

Re: my 1964 swb fleet gmc

i am doing a dual master cylinder conversion this evening,

i got the master by itself but found out it is the same master that is used on the power brake system so i could add power brakes at any time

Re: my 1964 swb fleet gmc

well i got everything in and one fitting on the master wouldn't stop leaking no matter how hard i tried to tighten it, so i had to get a new line, if it still leaks the master will have to go back. hopefully it warms up enough tomorrow evening to finish it up.
