I put an automatic transmission steering colume from a 72 into my 67. Now, if you sit in your truck and pull the steering wheel towards you it might move an 1/8 th" or so. But on my setup I have about an inch of slop. In fact, my Camaro steering wheel comes in contact with the colume itself. The top bearing seems to be ok. I think there is something wrong where the lower part of the steering shaft connects. Any ideas?

Pull the stearing wheel off, there is a metal nut with nylon threads on the shaft. tighten this aout a 1/4 turn.

I had the same problem.

Every non tilt i have ever had did this and I could never seem to get rid of the slip.
I stopped trying and got a va tilt...the shifter don't bind in the van columns like the truck ones too...another huge plus.

With the steering wheel off all I see is the turn signal assy, no metal nut. Is the nut below the turn signal assy?

On the top end of the column, the cancelling cam acts a spacer
between the steering column and the bearing. The nut that holds the steering wheel on is the only nut on the shaft. On the lower
end there should be a spring and large washer. The spring preloads the lower bearing against the upper bearing to eliminate end play. If the spring is not there or if the lower bearing has a problem then you could get the kind of play you are seeing.
