Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

Hey guys, so I pulled the fuel tank and looked inside and it is miserable. The sending unit and pick up tube looked like the Titanic and there is all kinds of junk in the tank.

My question is: Does anybody make a replacement for the 60-62 burbs? If not, is there an after market tank that works? This is pretty much the last thing holding me up from driving this girl around. Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

Is it under the body between the rails? If so I would think a later model truck tank would work.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

I don't remember how different the '60-'62 Burb tanks are from the '63-'66's, but the '69-'72 Blazer tank is nearly identicle to the '63-'66 Burb tank. Except for the half round indent for the spare tire.

If you could post up some dimensions, we can see how yours compares to the '63-'66 tank.

The bottom line is, I am not aware of anyone reproducing the '60-'62 Burb tanks.

Hi Cort........................I replaced my tank on my 65 with a new replacement tank from a 67-72 Blazer.....................It came with a 90 ohm sender which worked for me because I have newer gauges..............It also was a little bigger than the origional tank............Hemmit

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

Is it worth taking to a radiator shop, or cleaning the tank with a restoration kit.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

It isn't rusty but there is a bunch of nasty stuff inside. Smells awful. From what I've read on this board, it seems to be worth just buying a new tank instead of dealing with cleaning it. I am going to call some radiator shops tomorrow and see what they charge to clean it out.

But now the question is: do they make the correct sending unit? Mine is a bolt on, 30 ohm.

I'd reuse it; but thats me.....looks in better shape than mine was. I put a new sender in; they are available.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

I agree....See if you can get it cleaned out for a reasonable price. I'm not sure if the bolt on '60-'62 sending units are available from the aftermarket. I believe the aftermarket universal senders have the same bolt pattern, but the ones I've seen are 90ohm senders.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

I have to update my previous post; I didnt realize the sender I used was listed for 63-66. I dont know what the difference would be as my tank looks like yours. I think I would give this a shot.....

Hey pro-trash, if that is a bolt on, that looks exactly like the one I pulled out. I'll take a pic. Thanks for the info!

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

Cort.....I know the frames are different, but I find it hard to believe that the senders would be different for 60-66. Jus' sayin' Maybe if the tanks are a different depth??

I used that sender in a stock application, by the way.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

The '60-'62 Suburban/Panel sending units are attached to the tank with ~5 screws and a flat gasket. The '63-'66 Suburban/Panel sending units are attached to the tank with the twist in lock ring with a O-ring type seal. I don't know if the depth is any different or not.

I wonder if it could be drilled and fit? Gaskets are easy to make. May be the best option if nothing else is available. Would a generic sender be more hassle?

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

Well I called a few places today for cleaning the tank and I got prices ranging from $150-250 to clean all the varnish and sludge out. Since the tank isn't rusty, there shouldn't be the need for any repairs I would think.

What is your guys' opinion? Should I fork over the $150 to have it cleaned or go with a new tank from a later suburban or somthing? I'm still gonna have to buy the sender so with cleaning and a new sender I lookin at $200.

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

If it's that much, I would use a retrofit tank and avoid the hassles. Why cant you clean the tank out yourself?

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

There is probably 1" thick varnish on the bottom of the tank and I just don't have the resources to perform it myself. If there wasn't so much sludge I could probably do it.

I think for that price, I would go with a new tank and sender of some sort

Re: Do they make Suburban fuel tanks?

OK, I have posted updates on the tank and sender on my build thread but I thought I would post pics and info on the sender I am going to use here for future thread searchers. It is for the 55-59 trucks and the P/N is 47-9300. The float and pick up tube are 180 degrees out from the OG one, but I am fairly sure this will work.
