removing dizzy

I'm replacing the old cast iron intake with a new edelbrock aluminum one. I've got all the hardware off the old intake except the distributor, I was just wondering if there are any tips/tricks you guys may have to pulling it out so that I don't lose the timing when I put it back in. If it matters, it's a late 70s GM HEI.

Thanks!

Re: removing dizzy

Remove the cap and wires. Make a mark on the firewall, mark on the rotar and a mark on the distributor. Align it all back up when you stab it back in

Re: removing dizzy

If you do as Matt says the dizzy will fall back in the same place, and it will be close enough to start and run however you will still need to set the timing when you get it running again. There will be no way to avoid changing the timing once you loosen the hold down from the dizzy.
good luck
