305 cam options...

Ok well ive decided I want to put a small cam in my 305, ive been researching and reading all I can about cams and have landed on the comp cams XE262H. Now before anyone starts in with the "just get a 350" I am working with what I have but back on topic, would this cam work for my application? Im wanting good power with some chop to the idle. Also would I need to change the lifters, springs and everything or could this be a "simple" swap out?

If are swapping the cam, you will need new lifters. Buy an entire kit. You may need to install new valve springs too. Check with Comp Cams. Call them!! They will help you choose a right cam for the 305. Don't under estimate the 305. I could smoke a stock 350 with my old 305. It only had minor changes. Torque and HP we really low for our truck engines.

I have the XE262H cam in my daily driven 307. The idle is pretty mild. Fuel economy is about the same as stock (12 mpg). Driveability is good with the stock torque converter. FWIW, I have 3.73 gears and 9.7:1 compression.

If I were to do it again, I would select a cam one or two further down the chart.

for me people either love it or not really care for them i love comp cams thumper cams. They have a awesome idle but are still very streetable... in my opinion

When putting in the 268h cam kit can I just need to change the cam and lifters or do I have to change other things as well?

I would also install the recomended valve springs for your specific cam. If you are not sure what springs to get, call comp cams. They are very helpful and will tell you exactly what u need.

From what I understand, the 268h is right about as big as you should on the stock converter. Other then that new lifters and springs, and you should replace your valve stem seals and umbrellas. Your going to wish you did when your motor starts burning oil.

You "might" get away without running new springs. I would look into getting a sampling of them tested. But at that rate, you have to figure out if it makes sense to trust your new cam to ageing springs.

How many miles you have on this motor?

79gmcc15: Do you have any YouTube videos of your 305? I have a very lightly used XE268H cam (break-in time only) that I have thought about swapping into the 307.

bigwheel15: Buy the correct valve springs. They're only like $60. If you really want to cheap out, at least put in a set of "Z/28" valve springs (Sealed Power P/N VS739R or equivalent). They're pretty close to the ones Comp sells, but they're still going to set you back $30-40 so why not just buy the right ones?

85chevy4x4: What is your experience with the Thumpr cams? Which one did you install? How badly does it affect gas mileage? How much vacuum does it produce?

instal a stock 350 cam TRW #274 cam or sealed power cs274. Ebay has this cam new right now for like 35 bux.. and then buy new lifters. dual plane intake, 1.6 rockers, headers, no bigger then 600cfm carb, etc. some fine tuning... yada yada. AND I promise..... it will beat up on any stock 350 square.......

I recorded my breaking period. But if it's the sound at idle you're looking for I can make that for you. Just a little warning, my muffler is shot so it doesn't sound ideal.

The more duration, (262 degrees) the more the power band moves up the RPM scale. If you have too much duration you will have no bottom end torque and it could be a dog with no power. Generally the more duration, the WORSE gas milage. SO a drag car would have more duration (in degrees)and a 4x4 would have less to be ideal.

Dont ask us... call COMP CAMS!!
They are GREAT to talk to!
they will want to know your gear ratio, trans, etc... and will make a professional recomendation!

and yes... ALWAYS new lifters with a new cam...

Incidentally, the XE262H is exactly what Comp recommended for my truck. My specs are in one of the posts at the beginning of this thread.
