What options for steering coluum?
I was wondering what my options would be on a coluum? I see the new ones are $500 and up and was hopeing that there was a scrap yard solution. Truck has a 77 camaro front clip in it with powersteering... But a terrible looking coluum...
Would liek to get one from a car to put in it but do not have a clue what to look for... A 500 dollar coluum is not in the budget right now.. You can see somewhat of what it is in the truck now below... The ad on turn signal box does nothing for me... Truck is an suto...

Re: What options for steering coluum?
late 60's early 70's chevy van tilt is one of the best choices. What ever you use don't get one with a key in it.

Here mine 85 Chevy van, you get ign switch and tranny gear selector, cruise and intermitent wipers. The steering wheel is early 90 Blazer.

Re: What options for steering coluum?
I used an 82 Eldorado because it is tilt telescope, has the dimmer, locking ignition and cruise (future possibility) and is only 30" which reduces conflict with exhaust maniford. I also wanted the shift on the column to keep the floor and third seat position clear. Heres a photo, I will eventually change the wheel.

Re: What options for steering coluum?
I never did like the dimmer on the column because I always got my foot hung in the steering when i met a car... Very dangerous!
Actually, i like to drive old vehicles because they look old. The dimmer in the floor is much easier for me because i either have one arm out the window, or the other arm around a girl (not at the same time, lol) and the key in the dash is just where it should be. Looks much better where it belongs In my opinion, of course

Re: What options for steering coluum?
Actually a 71/71 Pickup column should fit in there and look pretty clean. If you are running a floor shift the columns out of the 4 speed trucks are really clean.
Turn signal switches are still inexpensive and easy to get and wheel adapters will allow you to put most any custom wheel on one. The Chevrolet van tilt columns w/o the ign switch are real popular and also pretty clean for a tilt. |

Re: What options for steering coluum?
Well, I just built one for this same reason. I didn't want the key on the column and the 67-72 column I had was way to long and reached in behind the frame. (might be ok if your using a rack & pinion. But, doing the Power Steering swap on my dads 55 I needed a column that would stop close the F/W this way the auto shifter woudn't contact the exhaust manifold or valve covers. So because the steering box is outside the frame a rag joint cant be used (as a u-joint) And the ford column has a rag joint right at the end. I removed the shaft from the column from both of the column I had laying around and welded a piece of the chevy shaft on the end of the now cut off ford shaft. It's clean its exactly what we wanted and for me it was free.
So, if your looking for the same thing I was as a finished product, you can use one out of an late 60's early 70's ford. You just have to modify the shaft. The column Lenth is 32" instead of 35

Re: What options for steering coluum?
seems to me that then 67-72 column would be to long on the inside of the cab. However, i think it would look great since it has no shifter or ignition.
i think i'm going to have to go junk yardin' to find something i like. anyone else have some suggestions? In my case i'm running a rack and plan to have 2 u-joints in the shaft to make it work.

Re: What options for steering coluum?
I just cut 5" out, and shaved the shifter off of a late 60's car column to put in my old couple. If you like the column don't worry about how long it is. Now, one of the newer ones would be a different story, but I like the no key look.
