350 and 400 tranny?
I've been e-mailing a guy back and fourth about a rebuilt 350 and 400 tranny. He said I can get em for $350 for the pair. good deal? He said I can hear it run in the truck then we can take it out. I've got a smokey tired 305 with the 350 turbo trans in my 86 c10. He said its an early 80's motor. you guys think this tranny and motor will bolt into my truck without too many problems?

It'll go in with no problem. You may have to shorten the drive shaft, but thats about it.
Oh and maybe find the speedo cable out of a truck with the th400, I can't remember if the th400 and th350 have different style inputs. Edit: is your truck 2 or 4wd?

Trucks 2 wheel drive. How hard would it be to shorten the drive shaft?

It's not hard if you can weld, to shorten the driveshaft you have, but you still need to take it somewhere to be balanced. The really easy way is to find a drive shaft from the wrecks, from a truck that has a th400 and the same wheel base as your truck. Or, there are shops out there that build driveshafts, usually the same places that balance driveshafts. I had a drive shaft built for my old 83 short stepside, it was $250 and stronger then stock.

I can weld but I'd probably feel safer bringing it somewhere. Does anyone know if the early 80's 350 engine would bolt right onto my turbo 350 transmission I have already?
My truck is an 86 2 wheel drive 305ci with 350 turbo trans. Thanks a lot for all your help! |

Yup, it'll bolt up. I'd go that route, and put the th400 aside till the th350 goes. Or just sell it.

Cool!, I've been doing some research and confused myself lol. I've read the the 86's have a one piece main seal? and the earlier years have 2 piece. Will this come up during the swap or will it just bolt right on? Thanks a lot for your answers Dalaigh and mooseknuckles!!

Yeah, the 400 is a lot heavier and not really "needed" if you are just gonna cruise the truck. I'd do the 350/350 combo.

It shouldn't be an issue the one piece rear main came about to stop the notorious two peice rear leak. It was a change to the block, but they continued using the same trannys till 92-93, or when ever the 4l60e came out.

I agree with the above...
That is a GREAT price... would be a good price even if the motor needed rebuild! I also agree with the above.... use the new 350 with your existing TH350 trans... Sell the TH400.... TH400 is stronger, but is not needed, takes work to install and eats up a little bit more power just to spin it!
