tranny swap
hi guys im new to the website and am wondering if some one could help me out. im a about to put a five speed out of a 95 chevy 4x4 1500 into my 83 chevy and am wandering wat transfer case i need to use to make the swap work

Dig, your going to have a tough time of this because output on 88 and later transfer cases is on the left side of the vehicle and 87 back is on the right side. There must be someone that makes an adapter to fit older cases to newer transmissions. Thats what stopped me from putting in a HD 5 speed into mine. I never did try to find an adapter. Mabey gear vendors??? jim

There's a very slim lot to choose from for a good transfer case that will bolt right up. If you can find a 89-91 NP241 from a Suburban or 1-ton pickup, that would be the very best way to go. You can get an NP208, as long as it's got the right input shaft. Some NP205's will work, but they're ridiculously rare.
Personally, I decided to go with a Jeep Dana 300 on mine. It bolts right up, but I had to get a new input shaft for it. It cost me about 180 bucks and some busted knuckles tearing it apart, but better than the 600-700 I was looking at to get a matching transfer case.

NP208's are chain driven T-cases. NP205's are gear driven. They both came on a few different types of transmissions.
Your best bet is probably going to be find a good transfer case that you like, and get an adapter for it. I got lucky with my Dana 300. http://www.high-impact.net/transmiss...case_np208.htm That's where I got all my info from. Play around a little on the site and figure out exactly what you need to do and go from there. Just remember it's much easier to adapt the transfer case than it is to change the output shaft on the NV4500.
