Water in the glove box?

We have a sloping down towards the house driveway and I usually back my truck down so the box wont fill up with water from the occasional rain we have here in Washington =).

I always keep my trucks paperwork in a plastic bag in the glove box because Ive had other 67-72 trucks that would get damp in there.

I had to use the truck today and I was lazy last time I drove it and just parked nose down into the drive way. Well we have had quite a bit of Washingtons occasional rain since I drove it last and the box had a lot of water in it. So i dropped the gate and drove out of the driveway onto the road to dump the water out.

When I got the box lower than the nose the water came pouring out, and the water also came pouring out of the glove box. I opened it up and my trucks paperwork was floating in its nice baggie in a pool of water.

When I back down the driveway I never get any moisture at all in the glove box.

Ive seen em get damp in there but never a pool like that. Is all this water from a poor windshield seal, or does it come in from somewhere else?

Re: Water in the glove box?

I get this Mark and I think it mostly comes in from a smal seam just beneath the windshield below the cowl.

.. with Nigel. After the water gets into the cab there is a seam on the right side of the glove box liner and the water runs down the side of the liner, through the seam and into the glove box. I'm glad you posted this. I have been wanting to see if I can stop the water from getting into my glove box by sealing up the seam with some tub and tile sealer on the outside of the liner. I will do that this evening since we are supposed to get rain tonight and tomorrow...

Re: Water in the glove box?

You may want to seal the corners of your windshield seal. Water gets into the seal follows the post down and can end up in the glove box. Also, the radio antenna cable seal (if you have one) is another area of concern.

Re: Water in the glove box?

I feel your pain on this one. My 69 Stepside glove compartment fills up lately too. Started after I re-painted it for some odd reason???

I'm planning a top cowl replace so will be looking for any bad seams then.

Re: Water in the glove box?

water also leaks in from the driprail if the sealer is dried up and cracked not sealing properly

Re: Water in the glove box?

I also have the leak and its ether the seam seal on the lower window or from the drip rail. I have had the water pool up in the glove box. Last time i had my truck out in the rain 2 weeks ago i stuck my head under there and could see the water beading thru the lower seam. I normally keep my truck under a cover and need to find the time to fix the leak and do panel repairs...

EDIT: Oh yea, also check the upper window rubber and the rubber in the lower corner on the outsid of the windshield if the upper dash gets water on it.

Just wait until the dripping water fills up the lower dash lip and you turn right and all that water runs right over and onto your legs.. LOL!

Re: Water in the glove box?

could being parked at an angle also allow water in through the antenna hole if that wasn't sealed properly (just thinking of other possible issues if the first ones check out)

Re: Water in the glove box?

.... And to think, I thought my truck was the only one with the optional windshield washer "back-up" reservoir built into the glove box. Been using the zip-lock storage bag system for my important documents for years. I've got plenty of rust issues..drip rail, windshield seal, cowl/firewall, so I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly where the water gets in.

Re: Water in the glove box?

I had the same problem...the water would seep in from the windshield rubber and go threw a little hole in the dash right above my glove box and seep threw the seem of my glove box and fill it with a bunch of water.

Re: Water in the glove box?

Aloha
Ditto here too, I took out the glove box and sat out in the rain (it rains daily here) and watched the water come in, first it came through the radio antenna, then there was a little plug that looked like it held up some wiring that was leaking, had a small crack in the drip rail that was allowing the water to seep in at the top of the windshield dripping right on the door panel, so far so good no more drips!
Aloha
