hey guys me and a buddy are going to make a go cart, we got a 5 hp briggs and straton with the crank shaft coming out the side, he has his small engines ticket from a trades school here so he knows his sh it with biulding up those motors and i figure i can make a pretty good frame etc...but what im wanting to know is have any of you guys made them or have any good pointers/ideas, we are pretty stoked and wanna get going on it..any pics or helpful info would be great

after spending the cash on tubing, axle, axle bearing, axle bearing hangers, spindles, wheels, tires, etc ... you would be better off financially finding an older one that someone has out grown.

I know that's not what ya want to hear ... but its easier to find one with all the hardware needed and then modify as to try and build one from scratch.

Find a way to give it some kind of a suspension. Most homebuilt go-karts have no suspension at all, which gives you a rough bone-jarring ride.

One guy i know built a large go-kart (more like a dune buggy) using a 4-cylinder, 4-carb, DOHC Suzuki motorcycle engine and tranny. It also has independent rear suspension and disc brakes. He is running 295/50R15 tires in the back, and that thing has no problem doing a nice wheelie

I say make it a 10 horse!!!!

A 5 horse can move a big guy like ok. . . . but a 10 horse outa cruz!

thanks for the ideas guys, the reason why we are going with a 5 hp motor is because we have one allready and its brand new, a 10 hp would be way better but for now thats all we got...i can get all the materials at work for next to nothing for free so we just need the parts shane mentioned, if that, its nothing fancy, just for around the neighbourhood

I am building one badass go kart it is awesome!!! I have built everything for it so far. I am about to put a 125cc 2 stroke motorcycle motor on it! It should haul A$$!! But it's like a show car to you aren't going to be able to see any wiring or any cables! SMOOTH with Flames.
