Extra gas entering an engine causes black smoke. White smoke means blown headgasket or something causing coolant to enter the combustion chambers.
I would start at the carb. Sounds like it is possible that the needle/seat assembly isn't working properly or that they have the float set too high. But this would be with no computer. With a computer, I don't know where to start. I would probably start with the O2 sensor. Seems like that damn thing causes more problems. I would also check to find out how to pull any error codes from the computer as well.
