Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

The carrier bearing broke tonight on the way home. So my roadside towing coverage worked out good. I just replaced this last year! Anyone else have issues with this? I got one year out of it??? Really??

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

My carrier bearing went out because the slip shaft on my drive line is messed up and won't slide right, so when the axle moves up/down it stresses the carrier.so you may want to look at that.

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

Also, I was told today that when you install a new carrier, you are supposed to re-balance the shaft

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

Depending on what type of center support bearing you use, they can give up the ghost rather quickly. Where did it fail? Before I went with a one piece driveshaft, mine always failed in the metal housing that surrounds the bearing. I've seen guys add a couple of extra tac welds to the metal surround prior to installation, which seems to help with longevity. Also, bearings from a driveline shop are typically of higher quality than the part you will receive from a chain parts store. There was a thread on the board not too long ago discussing whether or not the bearing from CPP was worth the extra money, and the general consensus seemed to be that it was worth the money. Hope this helps you.

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

In my old truck my carried lasted maybe a year before it started making noise.... I ended up having a new one piece driveshaft made.... problem solved.

it not changing doesn't really matter if what took the carrier bearing out in the first place was a ballance issue. If the bearing itself is what failed marking the parts and putting the shaft back together properly will probably work just fine.
don't trust a mechanic to be able to figure this out. I fix alot of mechanics driveline mistakes.

we usually weld up the ends of the carrier bearings and put a couple of braces from the base to the round part of the housing.

When you lower the truck it changes the pinion angle. If this isn't accounted for, it will wear the bearing out in no time. Just so everyone is aware, the center support bearing is what the OP is talking about. The carrier bearing is located in the rear axle housing and is another animal altogether.

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

the center support bearing or carrier bearing as everybody in the driveline industry calls it. Would only be affected by driveline angles if the ujoints are working at an angle greater than they were designed for causing a resonant vibration. That wouldn't hrt the bearing itself but the housing because it's so flimsy and the rubber. You might be alble to adjust the arrier bearings height to reduce driveline angles

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

After lowering my truck it ate carrier bearings right and left. I shimmed the bearing down about 1/2 inch and seemed to solve the problem.

Re: Truck rode the flatbed home tonight...

I will take a picture tomorrow when I work on it but it sheared the metal housing right off. I can't see up in there yet but I bet the bolts are still there with part of it bolted up still. Yes it is the center support bearing. The part guy on the phone today thought it was funny I called it the carrier bearing but I swear that's what I heard it called before LOL! And when I put this one in last year I believe I put it in correctly. Doesn't seem that difficult a job to do.

Mike I would like to see more pictures of your truck! Do you have a thread with side pics of your truck?

I had a thread on here yesterday and I mentioned that my bearing has some slop in and a member told me this. I wondered how it would matter (as long as the splines are marked and put back in the same orientation),but figured I'd throw it out there.

it isn't that difficult of a job to do right but it's even easier to do it wrong. You gotta get the olt on yoke back in time, the same way it came off not 180 out, then get the ujoint back in properly with the rear shaft back exactly the way it came out also. That's assuming you ont bend the shaft taking out the ujoints or removing the carrier bearing.
