Bad Power steering pump?

I just put the motor in my truck and got it running in the last two weeks. The truck sat outside for a while before I got it, and there was no ps pump or lines on the box. I am sure water giot into it, and might have ruined it. My motor had ps pump on it already. I hooked it us and the ps lines got hot really fast. I pulled the lines off and I'd like to test the pump to see if it is working. Can I just spin the pulley by hand to make it pump fluid?

Here is what the fluid looked like when I got some out. I filled the pump with fresh fluid before starting it, so I don't think it was that dirty. Looks nasty!

Yes it does. I'd pump that fluid into a catch pan then fill it up again and continue to flush until clear and it should work just fine.

agree w boog. Good news is, new reman pumps are cheap but bad news is the rest of the parts they supply fluid to are labor costly. Should be able to flush though and get it running ok.

Re: Bad Power steering pump?

Should it pump fluid just by spinning the pulley by hand? I dropped the hoses below the level of the pump and the fluid runs through clear, but I doesn't spurt or pump any fluid just hand spinning the pulley. I ordered a steering box, but I want to make sure the pump works.

Re: Bad Power steering pump?

If the hoses got hot the steering gear valving is probable stuck and the pump is running at high pressure or by-passing causing the heat.
