Cutting and powdercoating springs ??

Okay I know this topic is brought up a lot but I have a few questions I couldnt find the answer to....original front springs from an 80 2wd swb
-I want one inch drop in the front, is that half a coil or 1/4 of a coil?
-which end do I cut and with what tool?
-Is it okay to powdercoat them after or will that affect the spring at all?
Thanks!

Re: Cutting and powdercoating springs ??

Powedercoating will not hurt the spring at all. It's only heated to 400 in most cases and that isn't enough to change the spring rate.

Re: Cutting and powdercoating springs ??

I would start by cutting a 1/4 coil at a time and check them in the truck as you go and remember they will probably settle a bit more over time. Cut them with a cut off wheel. No cutting torches or plasma cutters.
