Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

Look at his opening pic, the main hub where your rim mounts is almost flush with the bedside. On my swd its in about two inches in which is about right with what you're saying. It makes alot of deference in how it looks. In the pic of crew cabs, there a silver daully that has only a small spash instead of the full dually fenders. That's what this swd axle looks like with dually rims. If I would have been at the shop today I could have given exact differance. Thanks for confirming what I found the hard way wen someone said they're the same.

Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

from hub to hub, where the rim mounts, is about 66" on this 3500 8lug 14 bolt rear end. It's the factory rearend never change. Just went out and put the tape to it. Before I started looking for a dually rear I put 2" spacers on to get it closer in width. It's not the first item on this truck that doesn't make sence but Dad couldn't find the build sheet before he passed so I get to figure it out. Would love to hear from some others with a 87 3+3 4x4 8lug 3500 on the width of there rearend.

Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

the dual rear and single rear axles are 67" wms to wms, and the cab and chassis was 62" wms to wms. (wms is 'wheel mounting surface')
Chips-resto, If its a cab and chassis axle you have, you would DEFINITELY know by looking at it

Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

First off I don't know any exact measurements but a dually pickup rearend IS DEFINITELY WIDER than a one ton SRW rearend. If you put a dished dually wheel on a SRW truck the wheel is going to hit the inner fender. A dually rearend has to be wider to get 4 ft between the wheel wells. I am currently changing a 77 K30 dually crew cab into a single wheel. If I put flat 8 lug wheels on the rear it tracks about 7 inches wider than the 78 3/4 ton 14 bolt I am putting in it.

A quick little search turned this up. To convert the front to a non-dually truck 1 ton, all you need to change is the ROTOR. Use RAYBESTOS Part # 5016R. This is the correct front rotor for a single rear wheel 1 ton truck. The spindle/caliper is the same between single and dual rear wheels.

The front is easier then doing a brake job...unless you decide to replace the pads in the calipers, then it would be the same amount of work to do a brake job if you remove the rotors so that they can be turned. To make short work of it, get the new rotors, new bearings and seals, pack the bearings and install the inner bearing and seal for both sides before even putting the truck up on jack stands. You could do the front in less then an hour if you plan ahead.

Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

the rear end in the swr trucks are different then that of the drw trucks
the differance is the drums and axeles and the axel tube leanth I cant remember the massure ments off the top of my head but a c&c rear end will put the out side dual almost in line with the front wheel kind of in the same place as a srw rear end would set as where the pick up rear end will put the inside dual almost in line with the front wheel

on the front end the differance is the rotors

here's a little wright up I did on here and dually scene about the inter change of front end parts

http://duallyscene.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4359

its not the gosple but its what I've found out

Re: 1982 Chevy Crew Cab Build! Need Help

I realize this thread is old, however the 14 bolt rear IS the same between srw and drw EXCEPT cab and chassis. the difference is the wheel mounting surface. do a search on pretty much any 4x4 forum, its somewhat easy to flip the hub around to run srw or vice versa.

source, experience
