Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
Anyone know the gear ratio's of a spicer aux trans...I bought a 67 gmc ton a few years ago,had a 351 V6 and a spicer 4speed trans..behind that was another 4 speed trans..with a mini driveshaft and a seperate shifter..
Truck was an old moving van..long wheelbase..and was a calif. truck. Is this an overdrive unit? in 67 build book it does say that aux trans was avail. I will have to dig it out to get pics..truck is long gone..I saved the whole setup. |

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
Sounds like a Brownie Gear or Brownie Drive set-up. Truckers used to do that and also some trucks could be built that way from factory. I never heard of it from the factory on a light duty truck. You have my curiosity stirred now.

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
I have a 68 service manual it says..that the aux trans..has
1st gear (low) 2nd gear (low) 3rd is normal..1-to-1 4th is overdrive. Buts thats all the info it has on it. Here is the truck it was in..and a page showing the aux as a factory option. |

wow... very interesting. Never heard of such a thing in a light duty. Is the SPID still on the glove box door?

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
I was going to make a rollback out of it but got $800 for just the motor out of it..I wound up with a motorhome chassis with a 454 Th400 and a dana70HD rear disc brake axle..for $1,000..And it works great.
I just want to gain overdrive in this thing.. Last edited by 70BLAZERX2; 12-31-2010 at 06:21 PM. |

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
Wow, that is an oddball. Spicer 4 speed aux. transmissions were a common option, but only on 7500 series and larger GMC's in '67. Most likely some enterprising former owned stuck it in there. Does the transmission have model number plate on it? While we are on the subject, Warn (of winch and locking hub fame) manufactured a 2 speed aux. gearbox for manual transmission equipped GMC pickups in the late 60's. I would like to see one of those units, but I would imagine they are very rare.

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
I agree with Bob B. These auxilary transmissions were found in big rigs and 10 wheel dump trucks in the 60's for heavy duty on and off road work. Not generally found in smaller light duty trucks. Is there a data plate rivited to the side of trans? Your really need this plate to figure out what you have. Spicers came in the 6000 series 7000 series and 8000 series. For example Spicer 6041 : 1st 2.14 2nd 1.24 3rd 1.00 4th .86 or Spicer 6041-A : 1st 2.14 2nd 1.24 3rd 1.00 4th .75 So the 6041 has a .86 overdrive and the 6041-A has a .75 overdrive. Other series have similar ratios, just more heavy dutier the higher the series.

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
I was on the road all day today..got a 97 gmc ex cab short bed..bad trans..and a 1988 gmc 3500 2wd with a 454 th400...And they are on my rollback right now..One on top..other on the stinger..I will have pics of it in the morning..LOL what a load..
Rollback is a stock 77 454 Th400 motorhome chassis. The aux trans i will have to dig it out and get pics..and tag info...I will keep you updated.. |

...green with 3 elephants holding the tail of the one ahead with it's trunk.
![]() I doubt a rental truck company ever would have used such a set-up for the general public to use. Makes me think it was added later on.

Re: Question about a 67 GMC 4speed with aux trans (twin stick)
I figured it out..This is a 3 speed unit..
shifter has 4 positions ..low neutral direct and overdrive. it is a Watson Trans Brown Lipe Gear Spicer model 43 Known as a "BROWNIE" Model 43 these were used in the 60's and alot were in the 2 to 5 ton trucks This truck had the 17.5 wheels on it..so i guess it fell into the 2 ton class.. here are a few pics of the unit....before it gets cleaned up and put in the rollback.. ![]() |
