Sorry to keep you guys in suspense, been away for a while. Sadly, took it to a friends shop, listened and watched for about an hour, and finally concluded it wasnthe thrust bearing in the engine. Result of a
Bad crank. Was also causing the harmonic balancer
To move forward when the clutch was pressed in. Way more then it should have. (talk about bad luck). Got the engine out, just gotta get a crank and put it back together.

You'll need to completely tear it down and get all the metal flakes out of it that the thrust bearing put in the oil passages and such. Did you break it in with ZDDP additive and as the cam manufacturer recommended?

Yeah, we looked, therewernt many flakes, but i will double check and look over everything. Yes, the lunati tech reccomended a special type of break in oil, i forget the name. Just a bad crank, unfortunatley.

If there are ANY flakes in the engine. They need to be washed out. Don't just check it and call it good. Or you'll be doin' this all over again very soon.

Might I ask how you concluded it was a bad crank? There are so many variables that go into a problem like this, oil pump, pickup height, oil viscosity, dirt, inproper torque and on and on. Just wondering if there is a more tell tell sign of a truely "bad crank"

Was the crank end play checked when the engine was built? If not, it's possible the side thrust surface on the crank could have been worn excessively. I would make sure to check the thrust surface on the block as well to make sure you don't have the same problem if you just replace the crank and reuse the block. Pull all the oil galley plugs and either clean them out with long brushes or blow them out with compressed air. The oil filter won't catch every piece of metal debris, so anywhere there was oil, there will most likely be debris also.

My '68 had a squealing noise on a new 283 with less than 600 miles, but it would only do it once in a while, come to find out the small yellow second wire to the starter had broken and then it would get against the block or starter and engage the starter while it was running, make a terrible noise, make sure your starter is not engaging, I taped it up and run it with the one main wire to the starter, no more problems

As i said, when the clutch was pressed in, it would cause the harmonic balancer to move forward about an inch. Only could mean one thing, bad thurst bearing. The crank we were told was good, and was fine to re use when we rebuilt. So we left it, bad idea. When we pulled the oil pan, it was more beat up then my truck was when i first got it. haha. We had a friend of mine, he rebuilds engines for a local performance shop lend us a hand. So that made it a bit easier.

Block was fine. There were HARDLY any, im saying, like 2 or three flakes at all, the thrust bearing was just bent-beat up from the crank.

Wow! One inch movement is a lot. Something definitely not right.

I found metal once in my pan, it was from a worn lifter and cam. I rebuild the top end and flushed the engine thinking "how bad could it be" the engine lasted a total of 50 miles. Point is I never want to see metal in my pan. Just food for thought.

There is no way that a Harmonic Balancer can move an inch from the crank moving. If the crank moved that far, the rods would be garbage!!! Besides, there is not enough room between the mains and the crank to move like that. I would take a serious look at the harmonic balancer if its really moving like that.
