Locating truck through L.plate or vin

Hi yall, I'm new here and I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to find their old truck by tracking it down through the vin or license plate #? In 1992 my dad sold his 1982 two tone C20 pickup..and I've hated him ever since I always thought it would be cool to see if I could find it and buy it back (long shot i know). So I began by diggin through my dads vehicle records and it seems that he threw out all the info he had on this old truck including the vin# He does however remember the license plate # and I was thinking that this could help, but the only way it would is if the truck itself was still tied to that same L. plate# I'm guessin that after 19 years it's not Do yall know of any other ways I could find this truck?? Thanks for any help.

VIN is the only way I would know. You can walk in to a tag office with a VIN and for $2 they give you current owner information if it is still in the state.
If you remember who he had the insurance policy with on the truck, they might be of help with the VIN.

Good story, but I smell a stalker.

Just kidding (maybe...). Best of luck finding your dad's old truck a.k.a. girlfriend.

In Cali the DMV won't give up that info due to crazy people stockin the owners. If you happen to have access due to your job if you look it up your job may be in jeopardy.

In Cali we do have a smog test history of vehicles that give the smog shops name and address.

HUH. I have an 82 LWB 4x4 (use to be diesel-by the VIN, nothing else says anything about diesel) I would sure like to find the previous owners of to see exactly what they have done to this truck. Some made a futile attempt and trying to fix it up and I am going through HECK trying to straighten things out on it

Your chances of finding the truck are slim to none. Best bet would be to find one and make it look like the other one did.
