Sound Deadner

So last night, I had a little extra time so I figured I's start taking my doors apart and order some weatherstripping, etc. After pulling the upper door panel, it looks like the previous owner glued sheets of 1/2 inch styrofoam to the inside of the doors!
not sure what that's all about but it took me a few hours of carving the glue off with a razor blade....

No rust currently exists inside the door and I found some rubberized undercoating/silencer at PepBoys. So, my plan was to spray some extend rust inhibitor stuff inside, let it dry then a light coat of this sound deadner and put the doors back together.

Anything wrong with my plan? I've heard mixed reviews on using undercoat and stuff so looking for advice/opinions.

Ive had good results with FAT MAT from ebay. Its relatively cheap and is good stuff.

I used a product called Peal and Seal. It's a roofing product available at Lowes for $12 a roll. Here's a few pics of it installed. The last one is of the area behind gas tank. I used trunk carpet material and installed with 3M adhesive. Mostly covered with gas tank now, but looks great IMO. Oh, forgot to add, the rolls are 6" x 25'.

Sounds way cheaper than the Dynamat I used. Do you know if it deadens the sound as well?

FATMAT is exactly like dynamat. Except alot cheaper. you can get like 50 square feet for like 69 bux

RE: Peel and Seal. Don't really know if it's as good or better than Dynamat, I do know that it's tons cheaper. I have seen some detractors from using roofing materials in cars/trucks, they say that when heated up, it smells like asphalt. Don't think I could have a more harsher environment than Mesa AZ. I have had interior temps over 140 from sitting in the sun, no asphalt smells. It goes on very well, adhesive is super strong, gonna a be a real PITA to remove if I ever have to. Just to ensure superior rust protecton underneath, I POR15'd the entire cab interior where I put the Peel & Seal. I also sealed all the seams with aluminum tape.

To avoid hijacking this thread, I will start a new one with more of my finished interior.

I use e-dead from eBay. It weighs much less and still deadens vibrations. The peel and seal is similar but neither is "as good as" dynamat. Dynamats just not worth the money personally. Go for the fatmat, you'll be satisfied.

I tried to find the 6" rolls up od Peel & Seal here in Canada but no one carried it, finally found it at a roofing company in the 36" x 33.5' roll.
I plan on putting in 2 layers of the stuff!
Anyone try to layer it, will it stick to the backing?

anybody tried squirting that expanding foam stuff into the space between thew inner and outer roof panels. maybe a good idea? or not?

Some of that foam is a high expansion item and I've seen vans with the side bumped out from it.

It sticks like the dickens. I didn't layer it, but i'm sure it will work. Living in AZ i didn't have any issues with the shop temperature during install like I read others had in colder climates. I didn't put it above the headliner yet, currently putting in on the roof of my burb. Prepping it for a rear a/c install. This is a my start of that insulation job. I used some jobber size peal and seal I got from a local roofing contractor wholesaler. It's wider, but still 25' long. I didn't like it as much as the stuff I got at Lowes, it had more of a texture to it, but since it's gonna be covered I didn't care.

This peel and stick sounds pretty good, does it work well to stop heat transfer as well or just sound?

Brian, that over expansion is what I'm worried about. Think I'll check into the stuff, see if there's different types available.

I did the P/S on my 53 and my 07 Tacoma. I noticed a HUGE difference with the Tacoma. The doors sound solid when you close them. Cab is also a lot quieter now. I plan on using it again on my 59.

lowes great stuff ? blue can low expansion foam, not supposed to bow window panes or anything.

rattle trap, is like fat mat, only a lot thicker, for a little more cost. anyone use it?

I second that. Peel and stick stuff only does so much, regardless of what brand you use. Almost all of it will deaden vibrations and the better stuff will deaden sound such as road noise. You don need to cover every inch for vibration damping although most people do just that.

It is worth the read regardless.
