big brake upgrade

I bought some bigger wheels and I want to upgrade my brakes. I'm not looking to break the bank but, it would be nice to stop shorter. I was thinking I could just upgrade the fronts. Anyone have recommendations? My blazer is bagged with square body control arms and drop spindles if that makes a difference. I'm looking for the "best bang for your buck" kit.

question #2 Will I need to change my proportioning valve or any other part of my braking system to complete this upgrade?

Last but not least, because every thread deserves a picture.

hotrodhomi

I have Cpp's 73-87 dropped modular spindles, same wheels ...damn same everything
anyways i didn't have to change the master or the proportioning valve
I went with Cpp's Big Brake Setup and it works Great

Check out the Cpp Truck Cruise Video that is on my signature and there is a Close up with the Wheels we have at the 0:42 minute of the Video

Re: big brake upgrade

it seams like all the upgrade kits come with spindles. Do I need to change my spindles? I already have drop spindles.

I agree.
Sell your spindles and use the new Modular spindles from CPP.
They will pull the front wheels in a little also.
I assume you have 73-87 balljoints and outer tie rods?

I have Square body control arms, drop spindles, balljoints... the works.

So are you guys saying I can't upgrade the size of my brakes without changing the spindles again?

I think this is correct.
This is a pic of the McGaughy's 13" Big brake kit.
The problem is that the caliper needs to move out.
This kit uses a "modified" 2.5" drop spindle that adapts a bracket to move the caliper out. (like most kits)

Contact member way2lo2.
He does a cool mod to a stock drop spindle that utilizes corvette calipers and rotors. (maybe more money than you want to spend)
Maybe he could mod your drop spindles to save a little money.

Re: big brake upgrade

If you want the most econimical set up, go for the Wilwood D52 calipers up front, and consider converting the rear with a 12" rotor and matching D52 calipers. There are several vendors that offer Wilwood D52 replacement calipers. Captfab offers the brackets for the rear conversion.

If you want to go to a 13" or larger rotor you will need new spindles or have yours modified. You can ship yours to Boris and he will mod them, but shipping may kill any cost offset from just buying a set from him.

If economy is your priority, I would buy the CPP, McGaughys, or Street Machinery (way2lo2) 13" set up and sell your spindles. Something to consider in making your choice is what back brakes you might want. If you do decide to covert to disc, McGaughys, or Street Machinery have a matching 13" available. The CPP kits match, but are 12" only.

Your next step up is Wilwood 13", but that doubles your cost.

Re: big brake upgrade

I will save you a bunch of time. Call me up and put a setof modular spindles on order, there is no second best. Although you can hang an assortment of brakes on the modular that spindle has made this world a much better place, not to mention from a salesman standpoint this was the best thing to ever happen!!
