1969 oil canister conversion?
I just picked up a new project and want to start with changing the oil canister out for the regular oil filters. I need to know where I can get a screw on converter to change it over. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

I just went through this. I bought my oil filter bypass from the local Chevy dealer for about 20 bucks. I think most parts stores carry a conversion kit for less.
Watch the sizes of the two bolts that hold the oil filter bypass valve to the block. The older small blocks had smaller diameter bolts. Yours should be the larger bolt size if it's an original block. They will also have to be a little shorter to fit the new oil filter bypass. I'm actually going back to the cannister type. I think they are a better HD filter than the screw-on type. (Or so I've been told.) You can get the filters at any good parts store.

Whoever is using the older cartridge style filters should be aware that converting to spin-on is good, but your failure to maintain the gasket that fits between the adapter and the block, can be death to your engine.
My uncle had a '67 Caprice, with the adapter. He changed the oil one day, and failed to replace that gasket. With cold weather, the gasket blew out and caused #2, 3 and 4 mains to turn in the block before my aunt shut the engine off. Those gaskets get hard and brittle, as they age. Don't ignore them.

I need a gasket
Heres my story ChevLoRay (related to JLo ) anyway I am rebuilding my engine that I had converted 15 or so years ago all I have is the aluminum piece with the new spot for the spin on filter. I can not find a gasket or o-Ring for it. I finally went to the parts store and looked at most of the oil filters and found one that would work I bought the filter and am going to use the gasket off it. I have not started (nor installed) the engine is there another alternative or should I just buy a new converter? I am perplexed. Maybe my parts people here dont have a clue? What have you all done?

custom 68.....
i went through the same thing two days ago while finishing the rebuild on my 327. mine had been converted to spin-on sometime way back and the large gasket was missing. i bought a canister filter element just for the gasket that came with it. works great. be aware that there is also a smaller diameter gasket that fits between the bypass housing and the conversion housing. make sure you have that too. mr gasket sells these spin-on conversion kits for around 12 bucks. |

THANKS! I had wondered about a second gasket. Sounds like I will just pickup another kit. Mine is the older version.
