Frame differences between k10 and k20..

I was wondering what the frame differences were between a 69-72 K10 vs. a K20. What drivetrain components are typically found in a K20?

Lastly, does a K30 single rear wheel exist? How common is it to even find a K30 dually?

K30 single wheel and dually wheels do exist.. just not in the 67-72 vintage... very few trucks were converted to dullie 4x4's by out of house companies for certain customers like railway and timber companies in 67-72.

So is the truck owned by a fella named Tony with a white 69-ish 4wd chevy with a dually rearend and a flatbed (some pics of his truck are on GMCPaul's website) a converted K30 or just a K10/20 with a dually rearend and a flatbed?

That's my buddies truck. It is a C30 dually cab and frame and he swapped in the 4wd parts. He did an awesome job as the truck went thorugh a bad tornado before he bought it.

The frames are essentially the same from an interchangeablility standpoint.

A K20 will have a full floater rear, either a Dana 60 or an Eaton. It will also have a dana 44 front axle (67-69 closed knuckle, 70-72 open knuckle). FE suspension components (ball joints, axle shafts, etc) will be beefier on a 3/4 ton than comparable components on a 1/2 ton. Typical ratios are either 4:11 or 4:56. 70-up will have the NP205 xfer case and automatics were available. 67-69 used the Rockwell xfer case and no automatics were available. All engines were available except 396/402 BB. These include 250, 292, 283 (67), 327 (67/68), 307 (69-72), 350 (69-72).

Hope this addresses your question.

Thanks for the info guys.

CPNE,
So are the frames themselves the same on the 10 and 20? Or is the 20 thicker and/or wider? I guess my question is could you upgrade drivetrain components on a 10 and make a true 20....not just a 10 w/ 20 components.

Yukon Jack,

Your friend Tony has one of the neatest 69-72's I have ever seen. Was the truck a cab chassis when he got it or did it have a bed?

Yes. There is no difference in thickness or width, the GVW difference is in the suspension components.

Tony says it was a cab and chassis truck as it has the narrow rear end. It had a stake bed on it when he bought.

TH350. They did not use TH400s in 4WD applications until the mid '70s.
