Re: all you guys that went big block was it worth it?

I've never had a BBC in a truck though I've got one going into a project (402) BUT I have a 403 in my olds and drove a 472 Caddy for years. They just "feel" different and are quite additive. If you love to drive, there is no comparison!

do it...do it...do it!!

Re: all you guys that went big block was it worth it?

Well, my family has been bracket racing since the 60's and started the Pro Gas/Super Gas categories in the 80's at OCIR.

When my dad built his Super Gas Datsun pickup he's had a SBC in it since day one.

Grandpa always had BBC's in the Vega wagon and Corvette, only SBC's he messed with were in my 68 C-20.

Dad still tells me, "My punk @$$ small blocks ran circles around them POS big blocks of your grandpa's."

Then again dad's small block were always, at minimum, 14:1 comp ratio.

If you build a SBC right, they're great, if it's a stocker, it's a dog, all there is to it.

Re: all you guys that went big block was it worth it?

well you have to ask your self what are your trying to achieve More torque Ok well I have one that will make that 350 run away from a big block and the cost of what a big block cost to build and put inside your truck want 3000.00 on.Can you say GEAR VENDER's Drag car's use them to get over 1000 HP with them Hemi engines Now a gear vender's cost what 1800.00 to 2000.00 and they work 2 ways they can give you unbelievable torque Or Gas mileage if you have a th400 you now have a 6 speed you have a 700R4 you now have a 8 speed gearing is where it is.

I have a friend Named Tom he has a 1969 Nova SS He kicked the ass out of a 2005 Vett going to Vegas He has a 396 with a Built 700R4 with a gear vender with a 3.08 rear gear the engine is only a 9.1 compression he beat that Vett with gearing. The Vett has a limit at 169 mph.the Nova was at 165 and still had half a pedal left and he said he was in 5 gear high and he bumped it up over 172 mph and shut it down

If you gear your truck to pull It will pull Big blocks are cool I have 4 of them. But one thing that Tow trucks owners told me back in the early 90's they rather have a 350 over the 454. Longevity 454 only last 90,000 miles they hate them umbrellas the the cranks like to walk on you back and forth they love them harmonic bouncers too.Not many people put a $10,000 Big block in there truck that's blue printed

trucks are made for hauling and working that motor. Not like the Nova camaro chevelle or elcomino there made to cruise

Re: all you guys that went big block was it worth it?

Well i did it, after all the questions I asked and threads I read I decided to go bbc! I got an all original '68 396 complete except its missing the carb and water pump pulley. The motor is bone stock it even has the original delco coil and water pump. I have no idea if i'm going to put this in my truck or my nova, if it goes in the nova it could be a somewhat "numbers" matching car since it is a ss model. I wasn't planning on getting a motor till at least the fall but I couldn't resist for 300 bucks
