Can someone tell me what trany this indicator is used for? Might not be able to see it but it says ( I4 I3 I2 R).

4 spd Hydra-Matic is what that sounds like to me.

Yes it's a Hydramatic selector 4spd auto trans. I found that reverse turns into park when the engine is turned off. And you have to have it in netural when starting.

Pretty rare I would say! Seems like it says 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4 as opposed to "I".

How do you guys like that trans? I have a B&M Hydro for my 55 Chevy straight axle car, but haven't driven it yet (still under construction).

Andy,

The way the trans. shifts is when you are driving normally at all speeds, you put the indicator in the 1-4 position (trans will work through all gears). If under load (about a 1/4 ton), you’d use a lower gear 1-3 (shifts from 1st. -3rd. gear only). If under (full load 1/2 ton) you'd used 1-2. When you park, you place the trans. in natural kill the engine and then shift down to R, a cam will drop into the teeth of the trans and serve as the parking cam.

When I first got my truck it took me a bit to get used to and because the trans was adjusted wrong, it would bark the tires in 2nd. Gear. Scarred the hell out of me and (others I'm sure) at a stop light a few times.

Since mine has been sitting for so long I'm finding that it shifts very quickly, from 1st to 4th in about 100 feet, then very hard when down shifting . I'm trying to find a service kit for it now since the output shaft seal is starting to leak.

Must be a GMC thing. On my 61 it says P R N 2 1

GMC used the Hydramatic in 61 and Chevy used a powerglide. I don't see in my service book if they offered the powerglide in 61. They may have but I can't find the info on it.
