Does anyone use these rims anymore?

I have a pair of rims that were on the rear of my pickup when I got it from my grandfather. He called them "split rims". They have a metal ring that goes around the outside and looks kind of like a bead lock. He said he put them on because the original rims had started to crack after his camper was on for a few years. Anyone still use these things?

Yeah, when I was going through the paperwork in the glovebox of my truck I found 2 recall notices about those rims.

Re: Does anyone use these rims anymore?

Loose them Please !!!! I use to work for a tire and wheel place and was one of the only guys experienced to do them ... No one else wanted to touch them ... When you have to use spoons , a big tire hammer and a cage to inflate them , that is where it gets crazy ... I saw a guy almost loose his life when he didn't use a cage and the ring exploded off the rim , banged off a couple of things and implant itself in the wall about 15 feet up ... This guy broke into tears and I think he craped himself ... Don't miss them at all , but also a part of our trucks history ..

Re: Does anyone use these rims anymore?

those widow makers are insane. my old boss used to make me work with em a few years ago. i used to see them usually as 16.5's. i dont think i ever ran across em as 6 lug though. all the ones i did were 3/4 ton or semi rims. i havnt touched another one since i had a snap ring fly right out the shop door and end up half way across the parking lot

Re: Does anyone use these rims anymore?

well there is one good use for them cus no body makes a small enough spare tire rim for the 1960--72 chevy trucks for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and they make wonderful spare tire rims But will have to look at the trailer places for that small skinny rim
