Went for a walk in the woods today
and found something fairly old and rusty
Yup a 47-51 Suburban! Its down the road from my gf's house, she knows the old lady that owns the property its sitting on, been sitting there for 30 years or so. Unfortunately the body is not salvageable, besides the crushed roof, its has a lot of rot around the window frames and rockers, the passenger side is flattened(more). I dont even want to know how seethrough the side sitting on the ground is. Really all that left for salvageable parts is the frame, not rot at all! 6 lug rear axle and torque tube, bellhousing, and of course perfect stainless dash trim. Also has a front sway bar and the original spiral shocks. Found fenders and the front in the heap around it. I was really hoping it was salvageable as I've always wanted one of these. Also this is sunk in the swamp nearby, I wanted it for a street rod but lifting it up a bit revealed that what you see is what you get, the bottom half is completely gone. What can I do with half a cab? haha Enjoy! |

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
So sad,
A similar thing happened to me in a northern California wooded area. 20 miles through dirt roads and gravel, this secluded camping / 4wheeling area. There were about 8 cars. All older than '50 half rotted and full of bullet holes. The saddest one for me was a mid 30's Pontiac convertible. I stole a broken piece of dash trim as a keep sake It sucks that some people let these things happen. But I can kinda see how they happen... I could care less about a Honda civic or a Buick la saber. How were they to know how much of a following would be for their old piles of steel? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
I'm always on the prowl when out of town. But I can walk around my older neighborhood and see "going to fix em up" projects in backyards. I've been in the same house 26 years and some of the rigs are still rusting away.

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
Reminds me of the backwoods of Montana near my father in laws ranch. You see tons of 20's - 50's cars and trucks that have rolled off the road. I guess it was just cheaper to leave them there

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
When I was a kid in Oregon they used old cars for "forms" to hold ballast along the river banks to stop erosion. One of the reasons my old man always told me not to wade around the steep banks (I ignored him) because I could cut up my feet on the rusted metal.

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
They did that here too. There are lots of canals that have 40's and 50's cars along the banks, or at-least what's left of them.

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
Yup I was dreaming of a little street rod when I saw that old truck cab sunk in the muck, the parts you can see are super solid! I tried to pull up on it to see if it was solid....nope half gone!
And I've always wanted one of those burbs, and of course its a pile of rust. No free rides for me! haha.

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
It's sad to see them dumped like that but one can pretty well bet that when they got dumped there they weren't worth hauling to the scrap yard to sell. There used to be tons of old bodys out in the sagebrush around here when I was a kid that got dumped there after people rolled the bodys off the frame to either use the frame for a trailer or sell it for scrap.

Re: Went for a walk in the woods today
I was told that people used to dispose of the old vehicles in the backwoods because they had to PAY to get them scrapped. I guess steel was more plentiful back then.
