Tilt-Column gear selector question

I have to replace my turn signal switch in my '72 tilt column. While I'm in there is there anything I can try to get my gear selector to be more convincing in gear selection?
It's an auto trans, but the column lever seems to slide around too easily between P-R-N-D-2-1, and doesn't really need to be pulled forward to move from one to the other. It doesn't have an obvious feel when it's in any of these positions.

Re: Tilt-Column gear selector question

The spring behind the shift lever probably needs to be replaced, they get weak and sometimes will break. Also check the shift lever for wear on the end that moves against the detent, they are common to see have a groove worn in them. You can replace the lever, or if you have access to a MIG welder, they can be welded and ground back into shape.

Re: Tilt-Column gear selector question

Thanks ls1nova71.
Replace the shift lever is easy enough. Was going to replace the pitted signal lever, so might as well get all 3.
Is the spring difficult to get at?

Any other suggestions out there?
