Running Headers? please check in here...
So I just picked up a 72 Jimmy, It has some hooker headers on it. I have always ran stock ramhorns, but this already has headers so I am gonna stick with them.
Right now I am not sure of the wire brand, think they are build to fit universal type. Not a big fan of how they are routed and they have the heat shield boots made out of that fireplace rope stuff. The wires are still getting burned. What are you guys running for wires and if you have pics of how they are routed with headers all the better. If running a pre-assembled set please let me know the year and vehicle they are made to fit or a part number. I am running HEI as well.

Are you saying the boots are getting burnt? If so try header plugs, they will fix it.

also as far as wires I am using the universals because they are very nice to be able to run where ever you want and keep them out of the way of the headers. they are the 8mm accel wires. just make sure if you do purchase a set of universal plug wires that they have the correct ends in the box that will fit your distributor and plugs.

Re: Running Headers? please check in here...
My biggest reason to stay away from them is they are a couple heat ranges colder than the standard ac delco plug

Re: Running Headers? please check in here...
I'm running MSD 8.5 Superconductors (really like them because they got heavy duty spark plug boots on them) and short accel spark plugs. Never had the first problem with them burning. There Jegs Part #121-31359. But there $70 though.

Re: Running Headers? please check in here...
When it comes to spark plug wires, you get what you pay for. All your cheaper brand wires were not designed to be used around headers. I paid $56 for a set of universal Taylor 8mm wires at summit the other day. I used some thremal over-braid on the wires near the headers.
I have never used the Accels, but i do run the Autolite AR135 plugs. They are about 3/8" shorter than your standard plug and come in typical heat ranges. Someone mentioned the heat range of Accel plugs being different than a typical plug. This is the reason they crap out for some people, they were designed for race engines. Most people dont realize there is alot more to spark plug selection than just the brand. Spark plugs are also one of the best tuning tools as well, if you know how to read plugs. |

Re: Running Headers? please check in here...
I've had the wires on my '72 with headers since '04 with no problems. They're from Napa, nothing special. I always run wire out the top
