Rear coil spring lower retaining bolt - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

How can I get the rear coil spring, lower retaining bolt out? The heads twisted right off. I tried a punch and hammer and it is rusted in real good.

been there done that if the spring is still hooked at the top your in good shape ...un hook the shock.... jack it up by the frame till the wheel is a couple inchs off the ground then get a BFH and let it have it...I ussually try it dry and the rust and crap will rattle out while the weight of the axle ill help pull it out...not fun and you'll find out what shape your trailing arms are in after you beat the rust out of them

Same thing happened to me. I was replacing the springs anyways so I just used a cutoff wheel and cut the springs out and then ground the nut flush and popped it out with a punch and hammer.

to get mine out i had to use a torch! cut all the heads off the bolts and then just used a grade 8 THICK washer to fix the melted part of the hold down cups

Take the rear end out, turn it upside down, and it's a lot easier....just sayin'.

Seriously, one side of mine was not cooperating. Had to take it out anyway and it sure went alot easier when it was upside down. Wouldn't recommend doing it that way if you didn't need to do what we planned.
